Girl Scout camp is where campers find their strengths and challenge themselves as they navigate activities at the campsite units, in the dining hall, and along the trails. Working at Camp Small Valley is a unique experience that can have a positive impact on you for the rest of your life and your passion can make a difference in the lives of girls!
Assistant Unit Leaders (AULs) orient and welcome all campers to camp, help girls plan their weeks and guide them through a week away from home. You are one of the camper’s primary caregiver during their week long camp session.
Due to close contact and overnight supervision of a Girl Scout youth population in this overnight setting, the Summer CampAssistant Unit Leader must be female.
AULs may be asked to specialize in one of the following programs, that require additional training:
- Adventure Specialists
- Lifeguard Specialist
- Counselor in Training Specialist

- AUL: Age 14-17 Counselor in Training Specialist
- Know the girls in the unit (10 – 20 campers per unit based on age) each week and help them learn to respect each other and to understand the differences and similarities of other campers.
- Assume responsibility for the health and safety of the campers in your assigned unit, with assistant of other AULs & the Unit Leader assigned to your unit, by maintaining supervision of campers, reporting accidents promptly, keeping the health supervisor informed of the health status of campers, and keeping the Unit leader informed of any behavioral concerns.
- Help to coordinate and successfully implement group living for the unit by working together and assisting with housekeeping, sanitation, and care and use of supplies/equipment.
- Help ensure the proper hygiene and clothing of campers
- Awaken campers on time and communicate proper attire for the day.
- Help to teach camping skills and appreciation of the outdoors to campers.
- Recognize and appropriately respond to opportunities for problem solving in camper groups, develop opportunities for positive interaction between campers, and engage with campers throughout the day in a positive and professional manner.
- Lead or assist assigned activities to encourage personal growth, learned skills, and creativity, and provide challenges appropriate to age, ability, and readiness for multiple GS levels.
- Responsible for assisting in the execution of the GSHPA crisis management plan for emergencies that may occur during camp at any time of day or night.
- Minimum 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Experience in supervision of children
- Girl Scout, Girl Guide, or similar experience preferred.
- Camping or Summer Camp experience preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to motivate girls to participate in activities and lead activities in a flexible, professional manner and in accordance with GSHPA strategies.
- Attend and complete all pre-camp trainings.
- Ability to quickly respond to emergencies 24/7 when on camp property and follow GSHPA established emergency procedures.
- Ability to live and work in the outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
- Willingness to live on camp for the entirety of their assigned camp season
- Full summer season - Begins in mid-June, about a week before camp is in session, and ends when camp sessions stop usually in mid-August (around a 7-8-week program)
- Must be able to pass required background checks.
- Required to submit to a drug test upon arrival at GSHPA Summer Camp. Any applicant who tests positive or refuses to submit to a pre-employment drug test will not be hired or will be dismissed from GSHPA employment
- Must present a current form of ID affirming female gender at time of hire.
