Job Description
POSITION PURPOSE:
The Counselor is responsible for providing specialized individual and group therapies for those clients whose diagnosis includes the presence of an alcohol and/or other drug abuse or dependence diagnosis. He or she is also responsible for conducting Chemical Dependency Evaluations and working closely with other treatment team members to address the client’s alcohol/drug issues. He/she functions under the guidance of their licensure, registration and/or certification and in accordance with the regulations, rules, and requirements of State of California and Federal government and accrediting organizations.
SPECIFIC AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY TO POSITION
1. Demonstrates knowledge of chemical dependency and addictions and utilizes knowledge and skills to access and meet the client’s treatment needs and requirements.
2. Timely documents on a regular basis within the client chart based on the facility Policies and Procedures, State, federal and insurance guidelines
3. Facilitates team interaction for discharge planning regarding client chemical dependency issues and needs.
4. Shares pertinent information with treatment team as obtained from client, client’s family members, or significant others.
5. Participates as a team member in all treatment team meetings and provides input regarding clients and chemical abuse and dependency treatment needs and requirements.
6. Discusses with client’s relapse warning signs and relapse prevention techniques and strategies and develops plans accordingly.
7. Documents provided services in progress notes in a clear, concise, timely manner.
8. Assist the client(s) in developing measurable chemical dependency related discharge goals and objectives.
9. Provides pertinent client information based on chemical dependency evaluation, and group and individual session interactions, to assist in the client treatment process.
10. Assists in developing chemical abuse and dependency aspects of treatment plans and treatment plan updates in collaboration with other treatment team members.
11. Acts as a liaison to community agencies providing chemical dependency and abuse services.
12. Provides community awareness education and in-services on behalf of the agency.
13. Knowledge of program policies and procedures.
14. Shares pertinent information with team as obtained from clients or family throughout program.
15. Collaborates with the medical staff to provide chemical dependency treatment services.
16. Attends daily staffing meetings.
17. Documents client progress/regression according to established policies and procedures
18. Continues with educational courses and in-services training, per policies and procedures
19. Updates knowledge of community resources on a continuous basis.
20. Maintains CPR certification.
21. Conducts chemical dependency group and individual counseling sessions.
22. Responds positively to changing situations in the work setting.
23. Ability to work as a team member, demonstrating maturity under stress and objectivity.
24. Demonstrates good communication skills.
25. Performs in a professional manner and role models a positive image of mental health.
26. Reports abuse of clients’ rights immediately.
27. Participates in obtaining the client’s informed consent for procedures, treatments, and research, as appropriate.
28. Provides groups as scheduled.
29. Participates in Performance Improvement monitoring and evaluating activities.
30. Acts decisively and effectively in managing staff, clients, and other employees during emergency situation.
31. Performs other capacities as needed.
32. Recognizes and acknowledges and treats co-occurring issues by helping client to adhere to medication management as well as established protocols for different diagnoses.
33. Communicate in a professional manner with proper use of telephone etiquette.
34. Perform in a professional manner and role model a positive image of mental health.
35. Knowledge of policies and procedures pertaining to attendance and punctuality.
36. Reports to work as assigned.
37. Understand and adhere to legal guidelines pertaining to client confidentiality and client rights.
38. Maintains acceptable overall attendance.
39. Perform duties independently, taking a proactive approach to problem situations, seeking supervision on an as needed basis.
40. Attends in-services and educational training as necessary and as assigned.
41. Seeks out learning experiences and incorporates new knowledge into practice.
42. Reports incidents, accidents, and occurrences in accordance with policies and procedures.
43. Maintains safety of the physical environment.
44. Perform other tasks and duties as assigned.
