Position Summary
The Substance Abuse Counselor at Tellurian's Detox Program is responsible for the clinical services provided to clients of the program and is expected to provide clients with clinical and supportive social services designed to overcome Substance Abuse disorders, mental health, family, personal, health, and other functional problems.This facility is a medically monitored Detox facility under HFS75. The Substance Abuse Counselor develops and implements the clinical focus of our mission to manage, motivate and follow through with client treatment planning and clinical services. This position will be responsible for primarily individual assessments and services, as well as occasional group facilitation, and other appropriate clinical services within the need of the program and the scope of their training.

Essential Functions
- Provide clinical services to both involuntary and voluntary patients, including some or all of the following: intakes, clinical assessments for determining appropriate treatment level (including ASAM, DSM V, and Columbia Suicide Assessment), resource referrals, short-term case management, crisis intervention, de-escalation, group and individual check-in sessions, education, and aftercare/discharge planning.
- Explain the scope of the agency's services and discuss the patient's rights and responsibilities in relation to their use of such services.
- Provide connections to funding sources and request/coordinate county funding for patients as needed.
- Work with individual patients by reviewing their social situations as necessary, and recommend modification of the original treatment plan as indicated.
- Maintain case records, correspondence, reports and other records as required by state regulation.
- Collaborate with all team members.
- Attend monthly program team meeting.
- Assist and support Human Service Specialists with intakes, discharges, overall patient support, and various cleaning duties as needed.
- Support staff if/when a patient must be placed in restraints.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to understand human growth and behavior.
- Understanding of how current social and economic problems affect the individual and family.
- Understand and knowledge of mental illness, homelessness, poverty, alcohol and other drug addictions, and developmental disabilities.
- Ability to acquire and apply a good understanding of laws, regulations, and practices pertaining to federal, county, state and city programs.
- Knowledge or willingness to learn of local resources.
- Ability to relate to people in an unprejudiced and understanding manner with concern for their circumstances and feelings.
- Capability to prepare and maintain necessary records and reports and to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to participate in and appropriately utilize available weekly supervision.
- Ability to build coalitions and work collaterally with other related agencies.
Documentation Skills
- Complete documentation including, but not limited to:
- Assessments
- Progress notes
- Discharge summaries
- This position requires an individual who has both written and oral presentation skills as well.
- The position requires solid typing skills and the ability to learn how to utilize the electronic health record our agency uses.
- Position will require use of Electronic Medical Records.
Education
- Associate's Degree required, Bachelor's Degree preferred
- Licensed in the state of Wisconsin as a Substance Abuse Counselor- In Training, Substance Abuse Counselor, or Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor required (Clinical Supervision is available)
Experience
- At least one year of experience is preferred
