SalarySTUDIO TECHNICAL ASSISTANT, MIT Museum, to provide project advice, assistance, and mentorship to students working in the areas of art and engineering collaboration, project design, 3D modeling software, rapid prototyping tools, exhibition design and installation. The MIT Museum Studio fosters collaboration between experimental museum practice and MIT research and education, connecting students with the Museum’s unique learning opportunities. Will be responsible for technical design and construction of innovative and adaptive prototypes for studio teaching, demonstrations, sensory experiences, and exhibitions; technical and conceptual support for student projects, teaching, and research projects and processes; technical instruction for students in engineering, electronics, mechanical design, and shop tool usage through informal learning environments or one-on-one coaching; purchasing materials/supplies; running and maintaining the shop and gallery; communicating about events/activities; program development; and other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED: bachelor’s degree; three years’ related experience; demonstrated technical ability and artistic/design experience; electronic prototyping experience (e.g., basic Arduino, LED control, DC and stepper motor control) and an interest in developing further skills on the job; comfort operating hand and bench tools and becoming certified to train others; instruction experience; and ability to communicate effectively to help studio users realize their projects. PREFERRED: familiarity with Microsoft suite and/or their Google equivalent (Sheets, Docs, Drive, etc.); familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, 3D modeling software (software agnostic), and working with a variety of materials used in prototype making (e.g., acrylic, abs, wood, aluminum, foam board, fabric, adhesives); ability to research materials, techniques, and suppliers; experience with record-keeping, reporting, and documenting; and comfort working independently and executing projects to a high level of finish with minimal oversight.
