Office Background:
The United States Probation Office is a division of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina. It is also part of a network of 94 federal judicial districts nationwide, including the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Guam. The District Court has active and senior Article III Judges, one of whom is the Chief Judge. All Article III Judges are appointed for life by the President of the United States. Additionally, there are full-time and/or part-time magistrate judges, who serve a four or eight year term and are appointed by the court.
The Chief Judge appoints all Probation Officers employed by the Court. At the time of their appointment, Probation Officers must not be older than 37 years old, have at least a Bachelor's degree and prior experience in social work, counseling, psychology, business, English, or a related criminal justice field. The Eastern District of North Carolina is comprised of 44 counties bordering the Atlantic Ocean and the states of Virginia and South Carolina.
- Attends court proceedings and supports Probation Officers in court
- Conducts interviews with defendants
- Assists in the investigation and preparation of the Pretrial and Presentence Reports
- Assists in the preparation of Pretrial Diversion Reports
- Prepares summaries, petitions, memoranda, and other correspondence
- Observes, learns, and utilizes different case management techniques
- Uses and develops community resources
- Enters data into PACTS and PSX
- Performs collateral retrieval and completion
- Proofreads and edits Pretrial and Presentence Reports
- Attends in-house meetings and training seminars when appropriate
- Performs other duties as assigned
Applicants must possess integrity, tact, good judgment, initiative, and the ability to work with a wide variety of people with diverse backgrounds. Candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as proofing and grammatical skills. Additionally, the selected candidate must follow agency policies and procedures, maintain a professional relationship with clients and staff, dress professionally, and maintain strict observance of confidentiality and the handling of confidential information.

The person selected for this position will also be required to submit fingerprints for an FBI background check.
