Description:

Boulder Surgery Center is seeking a qualified SPT for busy orthopedic ambulatory surgery center. The Sterile Processing Technician is assigned duties performing decontamination, preparation, sterilization and distribution of surgical instruments throughout the institution, utilizing infection control and safety practices during all phases of the process.

Requirements:

JOB QUALIFICATIONS/RESPONSIBILITES AND DUTIES:

· Work with all members of the health care team to provide optimal care to the patient throughout their surgical experience.

· Maintain a friendly, professional, positive and caring attitude with all patients, physicians and staff.

· Assure that the proper Instruments are available for each procedure.

· Clean, disinfect, decontaminate all instruments; assemble/reassemble instrument trays according to standard protocol; wrap and sterilize all instruments and instrument trays.

· Inspect instruments for proper functioning; send malfunctioning or broken instruments out for repair; arrange for sharpening of instruments as necessary.

· Check sterile instrument packages/containers for breaks in sterile packaging; repackage and sterilize contaminated instruments and supplies.

· Maintain records for instrument tracking.

· Follow policies for infection control in handling and disposing of infectious/hazardous waste materials.

· Perform required biological testing of autoclaves daily and maintain documentation of that testing.

· Assist with room turnovers by removing instruments from the OR.

· Attend continuing education offerings to remain current with outpatient and orthopedic issues.

· Possess knowledge of sterilization techniques and hands on experience with autoclaves and washer/disinfector.

· Knowledge of equipment function enough to be able to determine operational adequacy and to distinguish between operator error and equipment malfunction.

· Must have excellent communication skills and problem-solving skills

· Able to provide information and follow-up regarding sterilizer load data

· Restock supply shelves and cabinets daily, or as needed.

· Must be flexible in job duties and work schedule.

· Must be a high school graduate (or equivalent) and have knowledge of and experience with the care and treatment of surgical instruments.

· ISCHIM Certification or equivalent preferred or obtained within the first year of employment.


WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

Physical working environment may include, but not limited to, any of the following hazards: high pressure steam, chemical, electrical, mechanical, bio-waste, stress, back strain, body fluids, etc.

Environmental conditions may include, but not be limited to, variations in temperature, noise, odors, multi-stimuli, etc.

Pressure from high volume census to meet deadlines to obtain adequate instrumentation from vendors.

Extensive people contact and interruptions.

Physical guidelines include ability to stand/walk without limitations for up to ten hours per day; bend, stoop, twist; frequently lift instrument trays weighing up to twenty- (25)+ pounds; push/pull carts (i.e. carts loaded with instruments/supplies, video carts); frequently reach to load/unload autoclaves and stock sterile storage shelves; occasionally assist with the moving of patients on and off the operating room table.


MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED

Standard equipment including: computer terminal, telephone, washer/decontaminator, sterilizer (steam), instrument trays, peel packs, biological incubator.


INFECTION CONTROL CATEGORY:

This job is designated as a Category I job using OSHA definitions. Use of appropriate protective measures is required for any employee engaged in Category I tasks.

Compensation details: 18-32 Hourly Wage
