Pax Environmental, Inc. is seeking to hire a qualified Staff or Associate-level Paleontologist.

Location: Our office is located in Ojai, CA. All work will be done remotely and or in the field. Candidates who reside within the Santa Barbara and Ventura County regions are strongly preferred due to proximity of project areas.

DUTIES:

The successful candidate will work on cultural resources projects throughout the Santa Barbara County and surrounding areas within California and be responsible for independently and interdependently conducting field surveys, monitoring and excavations and fossil salvages throughout California. Ability to conduct soil and ground water sampling. Knowledge of various rock types, fossils, stratigraphic data and the ability to analyze and report accurately. Job duties may include;

  • Conducting geological inspections/monitoring/assessments/detailed reports.
  • Ability to create field work logs, geological maps, drilling and report writing.
  • Assist in groundwater sampling and subsurface soil sampling.
  • Assist in boring activities.
  • Field experience in sedimentary geology, including the collection of a variety of types of fossils and microfossils.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and procedures that apply to all aspects of geology.
  • Ability to utilize basic field geology skills including identifying and describing rocks, measuring stratigraphic columns, and recognizing fossils including trace fossils.
  • Conduct excavations and drilling.
  • Accurately record palaeontologic lithologic and stratigraphic data.
  • Knowledge and understanding of regional geology of California and surrounding areas.
  • Emergency response to wildland fire infrastructure restoration.
  • Communicate with Pax project managers, construction crews, and other field staff to complete the reporting requirements.
  • Use of GPS units and aerial photographs for project navigation and collect field data.
  • Taking photographs and detailed notes of site conditions.
  • Understanding of project environmental requirements and associated laws protecting archaeological resources.
  • Prepare high quality technical reports and documents.
  • Frequent field work, often requiring overnight stays.

SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Highly motivated and team-oriented.
  • Effective and concise communication.
  • The individual should be comfortable working in physically challenging outdoor situations in all types of weather and traveling on a regular basis to project sites which may require overnight stays.
  • Maintain flexibility as project demands change.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record and complete a background check.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in geology with emphasis in paleontology or similar
  • 6 months geology field experience (Staff-level)
  • 1 year geology experience (Associate-level)
  • Intermediate-level competency in Office 365 and other computer and browser-based software

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Required to sit or stand at an office workstation, sometimes for extended periods.
  • Required to work on keyboard, using mouse while looking at computer screens/monitors, sometimes for extended periods.
  • Comfortable working outdoors, walking and standing frequently for several hours and able to perform field work on uneven terrain.
  • Required to work with tools.
  • Be able to lift up to 25 lbs.
