Position Summary:

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Staff Speech Pathologist in the department of Pediatric Gastroenterology.

 

In this role, the successful candidate will evaluate and treat pediatric patients with a variety of feeding and swallowing disorders within a physician practice setting, as well as perform Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBSS/VFSS) when indicated. Clinical oversight will be provided by the Program Manager for Speech-Language Pathology under leadership from the Medical Director for the Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing Program at NYU Langone HospitalLong Island.

Job Responsibilities:

    • Performs clinical swallow evaluations for patients with various underlying medical diagnoses from birth to adolescence. Appropriately identifies signs of oropharyngeal swallowing impairments and indications for instrumental swallow studies necessary for accurate workup and treatment planning.
    • Conducts Modified Barium Swallow Studies to identify deficits in airway protection or oropharyngeal clearance as a result of disordered swallowing physiology. Evaluates the effects of compensatory strategies and/or PO modifications on swallowing safety and efficiency. Utilizes findings to determine any exercises that would be of benefit in therapy when possible.
    • Accurately diagnoses behavioral feeding disorders and develops treatment plans tailored to the needs of each patient.
    • Delivers clear and concise instruction in therapy using age-appropriate language to ensure the most accurate performance of therapy tasks.
    • Effectively modifies patient’s behaviors and implements age-appropriate reinforcements when needed to maximize intervention time. 
    • Continually assesses patient’s performance and updates treatment plan as needed to ensure patients achieve maximum potential.
    • Determines need for repeat instrumental assessment to update treatment plan, make changes to diet or discharge from services.
    • Provides effective counseling and parent/caregiver training to ensure carry-over of the therapy approach in the home environment.
    • Works collaboratively with all members of the aerodigestive team and recommends referrals to consulting services when needed.
    • Documents all patient encounters in the medical record according to department standards.
    • Participates in department and interdisciplinary team meetings to promote program growth and development.
    • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
MA/MS degree in Speech-Language Pathology; CCC-SLP form ASHA and NY State license in Speech Pathology. Continuing education required NYS for maintaining licensure.

Preferred Qualifications:
NYS Certification as Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD).

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $92,674.17-$101,478.25 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
