SWCA Environmental Consultants is looking for a Staff Biologist to support projects throughout Wyoming and Montana, reporting to our Sheridan, Wyoming office. This office offers a unique work environment supporting renewable energy, transmission, mining, Federal and State regulatory work, and oil and gas clients.
This is a full-time, hourly position, with benefits and is eligible for remote work from locations allowing reasonable access to projects in Wyoming and Montana.

What you will accomplish
The position will be a mixture of field and office work depending on project type. However, it is expected that 80% of time will be related to fieldwork occurring primarily in Wyoming and Montana. This position will assist with a variety of natural resource field studies, including threatened/endangered species assessments, botanical surveys, wetland delineations, and avian/wildlife surveys.
Primary Duties Include:
- Complete natural resource field surveys
- Organize and assist with QA/QC and analysis of field data
- Assist with completion of technical reports
- Use GIS applications, including ArcGIS Field Maps and ArcGIS Online to complete data collection in the field
- Safely operate 4-wheel drive vehicles to access remote locations
- Performs a broad range of tasks related to a variety of wildlife, plant, and aquatic resources
- Troubleshoots routine problems with oversight
For Assistant Staff Biologist, responsibilities also include:
- Supervise a small crew while conducting environmental fieldwork.
- Independently assigning and directing the activities of others on behalf of SWCA, often in remote areas without immediate guidance from senior managers, to ensure quality and on-time delivery.
- Ensuring that employees understand their responsibilities and delegated tasks and being held accountable if crew members under your supervision are not performing their activities correctly, productively, and safely.
- Serving as a conduit of communication between employees and senior managers, including communicating issues to relevant senior managers.
- Receiving and resolving complaints from employees in the field.
- Monitoring team productivity and offering timely performance guidance, including determining when correction action is needed and delivering appropriate feedback
Experience and qualifications for success
Required:
- Minimum of a bachelor's degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or related life sciences field.
- Two (2) years' experience completing environmental field-based work.
- Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following is preferred:
- Avian species identification
- Plant species identification
- Wetland delineations
- Wildlife surveys
- Pollinator species surveyswith benefits
- SSS habitat assessments
- Technical writing skills preferred.
- Knowledge of Federal and State environmental regulations preferred.
Additional Information:
- Ability to walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather and rugged terrain
- Ability to access projects in Wyoming and/or Montana
- Ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds
- Ability to travel up to 80% of time

An employee in the Sheridan, WY based position can expect a rate of $23.00/hour to $30.00/hour. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law.
