Staff Attorney 15:
This position is assigned to the Employment section of the Corrections Division and primarily handles the defense of employment related litigation matters filed against the Michigan Department of Corrections as well as some other state agencies, its officers, officials and employees, including statutory claims of alleged wrongful discharge, discrimination and/or hostile work environment. As a staff level attorney, the incumbent will routinely handle administrative, state and federal litigation matters of varying legal complexity, including responsive pleadings, discovery, legal research, motion practice, pre-trial preparation and trial, under the supervision of the Division Chief, the First Assistant and/or Section Head. The incumbent will also prepare settlement memorandum with recommendations to the client and assist as necessary in counseling and advising the client on general employment related matters.
Position Description
Senior Attorney 16:
As a senior level attorney, handles the more complex legal assignments and cases involving the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) and other state agencies employment related litigation, constitutional litigation, and other assigned issues and claims. The senior level attorney handles these more complex assignments under the general supervision of the Division Chief, the First Assistant and/or Section Head. The senior level attorney manages an active case load of state and federal litigation and administrative matters, and is expected to handle first chair trial responsibilities in litigation matters; drafts formal and informal legal opinions and memoranda; provides day to day legal representation to MDOC and other state agencies, officers and employees including representation in state and federal court and administrative proceedings; provides general legal advice to the client agency as requested on general employment related matters; drafts settlement memoranda with recommendations to the client under supervisor review; prepares case summaries and updates as requested by supervisors and participates in client meetings to review case updates.

Education
Possession of a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law.

Attorney-Senior 16
Four years of post-bar admission legal experience.
