JOB DESCRIPTION: Staff Accountant (Cash, A/R and Revenue Recognition)

Department: Accounting & Finance

Reports to: Sr Director, Accounting & Finance

Location: Hybrid (In office 2 days per week)

Employment Type: Full-time

Salary Range: $57,500 - $68,500 Annually

Band: Level 2

Position Overview:

The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) are seeking a detail-oriented and highly skilled Staff Accountant to join our dynamic accounting department. The Staff Accountant will play a pivotal role in managing cash receipts, Accounts Receivable (invoicing, collections, and general ledger reconciliation), and the revenue recognition processes. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in accounting principles, exceptional attention to detail, and expertise in reconciling financial transactions. This role is hybrid (1 - 2 days/week in-office) and considered an essential employee within the department.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Cash Receipts:
    • Record daily cash receipts, and remote bank deposits accurately and in a timely manner.
    • Collaborate with other departments to ensure accurate recording of all cash transactions.
    • Investigate and resolve discrepancies in cash transactions promptly.
    • Reconcile cash accounts to the general ledger monthly in accordance with the financial closing calendar.
  • Accounts Receivable:
    • Maintain the Accounts Receivable ledger, ensuring accurate and up-to-date records.
    • Review and post drafted invoices and ensure delivery to customers; communicate statement balances and payment reminders as needed.
    • Monitor outstanding receivables for collection doubtfulness and work closely with other departments to facilitate receipt of payment and reduce the occurrence of write-off.
    • Reconcile Accounts Receivable aging to the general ledger monthly in accordance with the financial closing calendar.
  • Revenue Recognition:
    • Adhere to revenue recognition guidelines within Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure proper recognition of revenue from various sources.
    • Analyze contracts and agreements to determine appropriate revenue recognition treatment.
  • Financial Reporting:
    • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual reports related to cash receipts, Accounts Receivable, and revenue recognition.
    • Provide insights into financial trends, variances, and potential areas for improvement.
  • Audit Support:
    • Assist in the preparation of schedules and documentation for internal and external audits.
    • Address audit inquiries related to cash receipts, Accounts Receivable, and revenue recognition.
  • Process Improvement:
    • Identify opportunities for process optimization in cash management, Accounts Receivable, and revenue recognition.
    • Implement improvements to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and internal controls.
  • Compliance and Regulation:
    • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and company policies in cash management, Accounts Receivable, and revenue recognition.
    • Stay informed about changes in accounting regulations affecting the role.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in accounting, with a focus on cash receipts, Accounts Receivable, and revenue recognition.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and revenue recognition standards (e.g., ASC 606).
  • Proficient in using accounting software and ERP systems (experience with platforms like Sage Intacct, Fonteva, or Salesforce is a plus).
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
