Summary of the role:

We are in need of a Staff Accountant for our Manassas, VA location. This position will apply principles of accounting and budgeting to ensure effective accounting and control, measuring, and reporting of the financial condition of NOVEC and its subsidiaries. The selected candidate will ensure employees are paid correctly according to NOVEC guidelines, IBEW union contract, and federal and state regulations. This position will also perform general ledger and cash transaction accounting.

Overview of the role:

Payroll

• Investigates and maintains payroll system for payroll related set up issues, etc., including system upgrades. Administers and maintains time entry system. Provides payroll related technical assistance to other departments. Consults with ACS and Lawson for payroll related system patches.
• Reviews and ensures accurate bi-weekly payroll processing, documentation, and required tax payments and other legally required payments. Reviews quarterly and year end payroll reconciliations.
• Trains and coordinates payroll clerk work activities.

General Accounting

• Prepares monthly journal entries and reconciles monthly employee group insurance invoices. Reconciles 401(k) loan payments. Performs administrative, general expense and payroll account analysis. Assists with the monthly closing process and maintenance of the chart of accounts.
• Prepares quarterly and annual federal and state tax returns. Investigates tax issues and make recommendations regarding discrepancies.
• Analyzes and reconciles NOVEC general ledger accounts for accuracy and reasonableness.
• Reconciles daily funds including lockbox, ACH, cash, and credit cards to the appropriate bank accounts. Reconciles operating payroll, investment, cafeteria plan, and escrow bank accounts.
• Conducts bank reconciliation, records cash and other transactions directly to the general ledger.
• Prepares reports, statements, and documents for NOVEC management and external authorities.
• Reviews technical accounting issues, provides assistance to accounting staff and other departments, and recommends revisions to ensure efficient and accurate NOVEC operations in accordance with accepted accounting standards and practices.
• Handles and maintains integrity and confidentiality of highly sensitive human resource and management information and records.
• Works continually towards self-development to stay current on accounting, tax, budgeting, and financial procedures and practices.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance is required or equivalent combination of education and experience. Three to five years of related experience and/or training in general accounting and payroll is required with Lawson software experience strongly desired.

• Demonstrated knowledge of company policies and procedures as well as all applicable federal, state, and local laws.
• Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and mathematical skills. Knowledge of payroll and budgeting systems, accounting theory, financial theory and tax law.
• Demonstrated proficiency with general computer operation, Microsoft Office applications and accounting systems.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with all levels within the organization.
• Ability to anticipate and meet rapidly changing customer and business needs by quickly refocusing and realigning strategic and operational direction.
• Strong analytical, organization, communication, and negotiation skills.
