ELI is seeking a Staff Accountant to focus on areas relating to non-profit grant and financial operations. This position will have primary responsibility for payroll as well as for developing and reporting on grant budgets in a timely manner. This position addresses tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including payroll generation, grant budgets and financial reporting, and year-end audit preparation.
ABOUT THE POSITION
This position's responsibilities will focus on two areas: Payroll and Project Accounting.
Payroll Processing
- Accurately process semi-monthly payroll (updates for all withholdings, taxes, deductions, etc.) in a timely and confidential manner.
- Set up new employees in the accounting system.
- Train employees on Jamis timekeeping systems.
- Review time sheets, wage computation, and other information to detect and reconcile payroll discrepancies each pay period.
- Maintain, update, and create state unemployment and withholding accounts.
- Provide information to employees on payroll matters.403(b) Pension Plan - track employee contributions and make timely payments, in conjunction with HR complete annual compliance report.
- In conjunction with Grants Manager and project staff, develop grant proposal budgets.
- Effectively communicate with Grants Manager regarding award documents, amendments and other funding modifications, approvals, and any additional services-related to billing.
- Set up new projects in accounting system. Understand and apply appropriate indirect rates to each job.
- Manage subcontractor commitments.
- Prepare monthly invoices and federal drawdowns with appropriate supporting documentation.
- Prepare financial reports to funders utilizing the reporting calendar.
- Assist with credit card reconciliation.
- Assess and pursue opportunities for maximization of funder billing; communicate with the Grants Manager as to your observations and actions taken.
- Maintain the financial folders for all projects, with all the appropriate documents, including expenses, consultant invoices, and monthly invoices, in accordance with standard procedures.
- Provide year-end support for auditor requirements, which may include research and reconcilement.
- Bachelor's Degree in accounting or business preferred
- Familiarity with ADP or similar payroll processing system
- Understanding of federal and state payroll requirements and compliance
- Experience with 501(c)3 accounting and processes
- Familiarity with Federal Uniform Guidance and cost principles
- Knowledge of JAMIS Prime ERP or other accounting platform, a plus
- Knowledge of standard contract terms, including hourly, fixed price, not-to-exceed and how they are applied in the billing process
- Ability to work well with others under deadline situations and respond to changes in priorities
- Good written and verbal communication skills and strong organizational skills
- Strong service orientation

- You must be physically present in the DC metro area (where ELI's office is located) and able to work 2 days per week in the office

COMPENSATION
The annual salary for this position starts at $62,500 and is commensurate with experience. ELI's total compensation includes excellent benefits including:
