The Global Ethics and Compliance Management (GECM) team is responsible for developing, implementing, promulgating, and administering the standards pursuant to which The Walt Disney Company and its affiliated entities do business, developing and implementing anti-corruption and trade compliance policies and procedures, and training Company employees regarding the Company’s Standards of Business Conduct, anti-corruption laws and trade compliance. The GECM team is also responsible for leading and/or supervising certain internal investigations at the Company.

This is an exciting opportunity to join an Ethics and Compliance function that works to support a wide variety of interesting and fast-paced businesses across North America and the globe. Working in Burbank as part of a global team, the role will report to the Assistant General Counsel—North America and work as a sought-after expert to support the GECM team in driving forward the Ethics and Compliance program, serving as a trusted advisor to the businesses with demonstrated excellence in judgment, and contributing to Disney across the North American region. This role will suit a candidate capable of lending their expertise on very complex, high profile, and sensitive legal matters.

Areas of Responsibility:

  • Provide integral guidance and support on complex, high profile, and sensitive legal matters including internal investigations and risk assessments.

  • Distill critical facts and information into useful deliverables for attorneys and business clients.

  • Exercise excellence in judgment and strategic thinking when communicating information to attorneys and business clients.

  • Help craft strategic decisions related to the design and implementation of global and regional Ethics and Compliance procedures.

  • Demonstrate an expertise in the Company’s compliance policies and field questions that arise from business contacts, exercising independent judgment as to when to escalate to an attorney.

  • Provide practical and timely advice on both routine and complex inquiries from colleagues on practical applications of the Company’s Standards of Business Conduct, policies and procedures on Ethics and anti-corruption, and access to and use of compliance systems and Compliance processes.

  • Work independently in leading document collection procedures on complex and/or high-risk matters, including liaising with the e-discovery team and/or third-party vendors, loading data into appropriate document review databases, assisting compliance colleagues in gaining access to those databases, applying designated search terms and other parameters to existing data, and exporting data from those databases as needed.

  • Lead day-to-day operation of third-party due diligence system and requests, serving as a trusted point-of-contact for the business with expert level knowledge to address questions that arise.

  • Assist in conducting internal reporting, and other Ethics and Compliance risks tasks, including maintaining and updating compliance trackers and dashboards.

  • Draft, proofread, and adapt communications and work product to internal clients and external counterparties.

  • Conduct research into legal developments, best practices, and business trends across North America, and summarize findings in written or verbal briefings for colleagues.

  • Collaborate with Company stakeholders across all departments, globally.

  • Assist Assistant General Counsel and other GECM team members in reviewing and closing compliance requests through online systems in accordance with written procedures.

  • Assist Assistant General Counsel and other GECM team members in preparing and delivering engaging and practical training for internal (cast members and employees) and external (e.g. certain vendors, joint venture partners) stakeholders on Ethics and Compliance topics.

  • Organize and maintain electronic file systems and records.

  • Undertake special projects and other Ethics and Compliance-related tasks as required.

Required Qualifications & Skills :

  • 8+ years paralegal experience.

  • Expert level of knowledge of the concepts presented in the Company’s Standards of Business Conduct and other policies related to Ethics and anti-corruption.

  • High level of knowledge of Disney’s various businesses.

  • High level of knowledge of commonly used e-discovery software such as Recommind, Cellebrite, and others.

  • Ability to work independently on complex and/or high-risk matters.

  • Demonstrated “EQ” skills to build bridges, forge alliances and encourage people to want to work with you to foster cross-departmental collaboration.

  • Must be team-oriented and able to multi-task, prioritize and manage multiple projects.

  • Ability to perform duties with a high-level of professionalism and courtesy.

  • Ability to engage effectively with people from different linguistic, cultural and professional backgrounds.

  • Ability to communicate complex and sensitive subjects in an accessible way.

  • Ability to identify relevant information and exercise independent and excellent judgment in distilling and presenting information to attorneys and business clients.

  • Expert in working with third party vendor platforms, such as Kroll, OneTrust, and Dow Jones.

  • Excellence in quickly developing operational expertise regarding various compliance tools and systems used at the Company and adaptability when those tools and systems change.

  • Expert in managing large document collections, including familiarity with proper forms of forensic collection, the types of information typically collected, maintenance of chain of custody, preservation of data, and production of identifiable materials for attorney use.

  • Demonstrated expert ability to maintain utmost confidentiality when dealing with privileged, high profile, and highly sensitive information.

  • Excellent organizational skills and extreme attention to detail.

  • A highly professional demeanor, positive outlook and a can-do attitude.

  • Professional fluency in English.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional fluency in a second language.

  • Experience working in a large national law firm, global company or public-facing organization.

  • Experience working in an investigations and/or litigation practice.

  • Experience of or demonstrated interest in use of data analytics, workflow/routine process automation, etc. in a professional environment.

Required Education:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree and/or qualifications to be a paralegal by certification or education and work experience as set forth by the American Bar Association and any applicable state codes

The hiring range for this position in Burbank, CA is $112,100.00 to $150,200.00 per year based on a 40 hour work week. The amount of hours scheduled per week may vary based on business needs. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
