This role is based out of our Boise, ID location and has a hybrid schedule.


Job Description Summary

As an Embedded Software Engineer, you will be responsible for developing real-time Embedded Software for all of HydroPoint-owned product lines. Major responsibility will be to research, plan, design, develop/code, and maintain Embedded Software; validating your firmware and tools before delivering to QA. Perform software/hardware integration testing, verification and debugging. Actively work with cross-functional team members to deliver features and products. Identify, analyze and provide problem resolution to a broad spectrum of issues.

This position will work closely with all engineering roles and take guidance from system architects. This position reports to the Manager of Engineering

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the software development team to develop/maintain Embedded Software for existing and new products.
  • Contribute to specifications, architecture decisions, schedules, and other artifacts of software and FW development.
  • Help create infrastructure for continuous integration, unit testing and regression tests - including scripts, tools, and automation frameworks.
  • Follow the department’s software development processes and contribute to the ongoing process improvement activities while keeping up to date with the latest development methods, strategies and tools.
  • Stay abreast of applicable technologies, such as embedded computing, barcoding, scanning, displays, wireless communications, and other technologies applicable to supporting and innovating our product lines.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • BS in Physics, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of previous design engineering experience in an embedded design environment.
  • Embedded, DSP and FPGA Algorithm Coding and Optimization skills using typical industry tools and techniques.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Demonstrated an understanding of electronic design Schematics and Embedded Design Validation.
  • Embedded applications written in C
  • Experience with extreme low-power applications for battery-powered devices.
  • Ability to develop complex engineering, documentation, specifications, and reports.
  • Engineering Systems knowledge and demonstrated ability to implement engineering changes from an integrated systems perspective.
  • Communication with cloud services
  • Bootloaders and OTA updates
  • LCDs and UI design
  • RTOS
  • Networking, Ethernet, TCP/IP, WIFI, Cellular, Wireshark, TLS, CSS, HTML
  • Ability to thrive in a flexible and dynamic environment.
  • Design experience with DSP, FPGA, Microcontroller, and communications protocols and methodologies.
  • Recent experience developing an integrated solution using UART, USB, I2C, SPI, or other common protocols to interface with peripheral devices.

  • Work Environment includes exposure to or working in or around equipment and machinery including a computer keyboard and mouse.
  • May require occasional travel.
  • Frequency Definitions: Constant = Over 40% / Frequent = Up to 40% / Occasional = Up to 10%

The physical demands and work environment characteristics described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

  • Physical Demands include constant walking, standing, bending at the neck and waist, squatting, climbing, kneeling, crawling, twisting at the neck and waist, simple grasping, power grasping, and fine manipulation with hands, pushing and pulling with hands, reaching above shoulder level, and lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs.; also frequent lifting and carrying of up to 75 lbs., occasional sitting and lifting and carrying of up to 100+ lbs. Travel by air or car up to 75% of the time and will be required to drive safely for long distances.
  • Work Environment includes exposure to or working in or around moving cars, trucks, forklifts, equipment and machinery including a computer keyboard and mouse; uneven ground; excessive noise; extremes in temperature, humidity, or wetness; dust, gas, fumes, or chemicals; venomous insects and animals, heights; operation of foot controls or repetitive foot movement; use of special visual or auditory protective equipment. May be required to work outdoors in an agricultural crop field, assist in putting out demonstration plots, wear a respirator and other personal protection equipment.
