One Year Skull Base Research Fellowship, Department of Neurological Surgery
The Department of Neurological Surgery at Loyola Medicine is pleased to announce a new research fellowship to help advance priority initiatives of Douglas E. Anderson, M.D. and Anand V. Germanwala, M.D., Department Chair and Residency Program Director, respectively.
Generously funded by an anonymous donor, the fellowship offers the right candidate an opportunity to be part of a nationally recognized team to assist with the development, project management, and implementation of robust, skull base translational research and garner the opportunity for peer-reviewed publications and regional/national oral presentations while advancing the science of skull base surgery.
This is a paid position at Loyola University Medical Center.
An office and computer are provided to the skull base research fellow.
Neurological Surgery at Loyola Medicine
Loyola Medicine has one of the most comprehensive and advanced neurosciences teams in the nation. Our expert team takes a multidisciplinary approach to patient care and provides support services for patients and families. Our neurosurgery department is consistently recognized by U.S. News & World Report and takes on the most challenging cases because of the team's vast experience and reputation for multidisciplinary partnership. We have one of the highest volumes of skull base neurosurgery in the Chicagoland area, and perform approximately 150 such procedures every year with outstanding outcomes.
Our team is nationally recognized and frequently lecture at the national and international levels. We publish roughly 45 Pubmed cited articles and chapters annually and look forward to involving the research fellow with such projects.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Have the opportunity to observe skull base surgery in the operating room
- Understand the complex neuroanatomy related to skull base surgery
- Shadow nationally renowned skull base neurosurgeons
- Work with a multidisciplinary team including neurosurgery, otolaryngology, neuroradiology, ophthalmology, and endocrinology
- Develop a longitudinal project within the anterior and/or lateral skull base realms
- Oversee all aspects of multiple manuscript preparation, submission, and revision for peer-reviewed publications, including: identification and review of pertinent patient history charts; collection, organization and interpretation of subsequent data; co-author and appropriately edit manuscripts; format final manuscripts and all figures according to individual journal specifications; manage potential manuscript revisions
- Assist in poster and/or lecture preparation for local, national, and international conferences
- Coordinate the collection and analysis of functional neuroimaging (fMRI, DTI) in neurosurgical skull base patient populations
- Present research findings and updates intra- and extra-departmentally
- Work with local IRB to understand and maintain legal policies
Minimum Education
Required: Bachelor's Degree OR equivalent training acquired via work experience or education
Preferred: Doctor of Medicine
Preferred Qualifications
- Interest and experience with skull base neurosurgery
- Interest and experience in artificial intelligence and/or machine learning
- Ability to analyze and interpret data
- Ability to communicate verbally
- Ability to deal calmly and courteously with people
- Ability to finish tasks in a timely manner
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and established procedures
- Ability to maintain accuracy and consistency
- Ability to perform basic filing, office procedures and word processing
