Job Description Summary: The Sr. Director, Consumer Financial Services, Venmo leads a product and commercial team responsible for the reimagination of Venmo’s Consumer Financial Services (including Debit card, Funds In/Out, Balance, and Credit card), while delivering compelling experiences that deepen customer relationships and create brand loyalty. Our mission is to offer seamless Venmo cash management solutions rivaling those of a bank to enable our consumers to use Venmo for all of their day to day payment needs. This product spans across customer segments, enabling some of the largest and most complex use cases. In this competitive environment, we want to continue to innovate and deliver products that resonate with consumers and scale quickly.

Job Description:

The Role


As Sr. Director, Consumer Financial Services, Venmo you will have end-to-end accountability, from strategy and planning, product development & performance to commercial outcomes. This is a GM role with a strong product focus and a cross-functional support structure to help manage one of Venmo’s most strategic priorities.

  • Product Strategy: This role is responsible for creating the mid and long-term strategy and direction for the product lines with a view of the external environment and consumer expectations. She/they/he should also develop a clear view on how we get ahead of the key competitive players while building uniquely Venmo experiences.
  • Ownership of end-to-end user experiences: Lead the team in building world-class experiences with a clear connected value prop for our Venmo consumers. This leader would have a clear vision of how various products and features come together to help us achieve our strategic vision. This would involve close partnerships with cross-functional partners across the PayPal Financial Services, Credit, Risk & Identity teams, etc.
  • Building Scalable Products: A key part of the role is to have a robust strategy on how we scale the products to our large consumer base.
  • Effective go-to-market strategy: This product leader will also be responsible for developing and implementing the Go-to-Market in close partnership with the Marketing team to build a strong inbound feedback loop from consumers and take products to market in a cohesive manner that is efficient and scales quickly. This also includes decisions on Pilot vs consumer ramp, which segments/markets to scale first, etc.
  • Accountability for the Commercial outcomes for the Product Line: This leader will be responsible for the financial commitments & key KPIs along with product delivery based on the commitments made.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of Product Managers and provide strategic leadership and day-to-day decisions for a very large cross-functional team that supports your product lines.
  • Lead product strategy development, and share a clear, executable view of the product strategy in leadership forums and with the cross-functional teams (through all hands, etc.).
  • Lead successful execution of products and features that innovate, scale, and meet fintech regulatory requirements.
  • Engage closely with engineering and architecture to help drive the architectural runway and determine the best technical implementation/design while balancing time-to-market needs for critical customer pain points.
  • Represent the end customer on an ongoing basis and use this to drive effective prioritization and decision-making.
  • Collaborate and drive product outcomes in a matrix organization with multiple stakeholders – Engineering, Operations, Risk, Legal, Sales, Business Development, Marketing, Finance and Banking Partners.
  • Data-driven decision-making: Use A/B Testing, analytics, customer discovery, market research, and competitive analysis to drive decision-making.
  • Responsible for budget commitments and execution of KPIs, decisions to course correct as needed. Lead operating mechanisms that drive execution and accountability like Monthly Product Reviews, Monthly Business/OKR Reviews, and Operating Reviews with the CEO staff, as needed.

Key Requirements:

  • At least 10 years’ experience providing business and/or product leadership
  • Direct prior experience in eCommerce, FinTech, and banking ecosystem strongly preferred
  • 7+ years managing product and technology teams across multiple products and industries
  • Proven track record for building, launching, and maintaining high-scale, successful products
  • Engage with customers on problem discovery and solutioning as they expand their businesses
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams across Engineering, Sales, Support, Finance, go-to- market, Risk & Compliance, to deliver best-in-class products and experiences.
  • Effective delivering products in a matrixed organization, influence and align partners across different points of view or functions, to drive action and change
  • Ruthlessly prioritize initiatives and leverage creative solutions including 3rd parties
  • Ability to make decisions and progress in the face of ambiguous and at times overlapping priorities
  • Manage complex deliverables and maintain high-quality standards while meeting project timelines
  • Highly developed communication and presentations skills with a superior ability to effectively communicate and present complex concepts and issues to leadership teams in a highly compelling, persuasive, fact-based manner.
  • Prior experience as an Agile Product Owner (Scrum/XP), with a deep understanding of the critical skillsets leveraged, including:
    • Product roadmap development and communication
    • Backlog grooming and prioritization
    • Partnership with architecture and engineering teams to ensure complete product definition, including both functional and non-functional requirements
    • Acceptance criteria and KPI implementation to drive product level Definition of Done
    • Cross-team prioritization and dependency management in a scaled Agile environment
