Job description

Purpose and Scope
The SQL Developer for the Research & Performance Management department will write, optimize, and maintain SQL queries and stored procedures in a complex data environment. This position will work directly with department stakeholders and the project manager to collect and meet technical requirements for projects related to research, evaluation, and business intelligence reporting needs of Memphis-Shelby County Schools. This position will be a member of a highly collaborative team that supplies critical data needed to drive improvement in student outcomes.
Essential Job Functions
  1. Translates stakeholder requirements into sophisticated in-application SQL queries, primarily within a cloud-based data warehouse (Snowflake).
  2. Develops, implements, and optimizes functions and procedures using Snowflake SQL based on business requirements.
  3. Researches required data and develops test cases/plans for irregularities to ensure high-quality releases through test driven development
  4. Creates inline documentation that communicates technical requirements and business rules for other technical users.
  5. Analyzes and reviews existing SQL queries and processes, suggest and make changes for run time performance improvements (RTI) and query optimizations.
  6. Partners with Data Engineers to perform source system and data analysis in identification of key data quality or transformation or extraction issues, data profiling and development of normalized and star-snowflake physical schemas.
  7. Handles and supports database related upgrades, backup, recovery, migration, audits.
  8. Research data and develop test scenarios, cases, and plans to address irregularities to ensure high-quality data after production releases through test driven development.
  9. Collaborate with cross functional teams to ensure all dashboard and reports have high quality data and information for actionable insights.
  10. Performs code reviews and asks for/provides peer feedback, upkeep technical documentation
  11. Support quality assurance testing to ensure efficient and precise data and information are delivered via Power BI reporting in production environment.
  12. Works with Research team to understand research and program evaluation data needs, then creates SQL tables and views to meet those needs
  13. Automates the production of SQL tables and views and automates the exporting of data to flat files to meet research and program evaluation data needs
  14. Fills ad hoc data requests from other departments and from external partners
  15. Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Services, Computer Engineering, Management Information Systems or similar field plus an additional 1 to 2 years related experience, or equivalent, for a total education/experience of five (5) to seven (7) years. Plus, one (1) years of experience writing complicated SQL statements
(PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED)
Degree Equivalency Formula:
Bachelor's Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.
Master's Degree=6 years plus required years of experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • 3-5 years' experience and proficiency in SQL development, technical design and writing complex queries. Experience with creating stored procedures, functions, or packages a plus.
  • Experience in data warehouse, data engineering development teams
  • Knowledge and experience or familiarization with snowflake database SQL, power BI data visualization is a plus.
  • Knowledge of and experience with data in the K-12 education landscape a plus
  • Knowledge of student information systems such as PowerSchool system is a plus
  • Knowledge of research methodology and data quality assurance a plus
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail and the ability to understand complex data swiftly and accurately
  • Must have a strong understanding of database schema object management, data modeling and architecture.
  • Capable of independently troubleshooting common database issues or unexpected query results
  • Strong team player with great interpersonal, collaborative, and communication skills
  • Ability to plan resource requirements from high-level specifications with strong organization and time management
  • Ability to monitor and maintain data quality and standards
  • Knowledge of best practices when dealing with relational databases
  • Familiarity with code versioning tools, like Git, SVN, and Mercurial
  • Skilled at optimizing large, complicated SQL statements preferred
  • Azure Storage experience a plus
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Python - knowledge of Luigi, pandas, SQL alchemy/pyodbc, a plus

Physical Requirements and Working Environment
Physical Demands: Requires sedentary work involving standing or walking for brief periods, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis; and some dexterity in operating office equipment.
Unavoidable Hazards: The position is exposed to no unusual environmental hazards.
Sensory (ADA) Requirements: The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities.
