JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for performing specimen accessioning, sample sorting and data entry in a fast-paced, high- throughput environment according to established standard operating procedures.
RESPONSIBILITIES (NOT LIMITED TO)
- Introduce and prepare biological specimens to the laboratory to ensure accurate processing
- Open specimens and pour off into secondary containers to prepare for analysis and testing
- Verify patient demographic information matches the test requisition form submitted
- Data entry of patient information into the computer system for tracking purposes
- Meet key production metrics and quality measures to ensure timely and accurate results
- Unpack and route specimens to their respective staging areas
- Properly prepare and store excess specimen samples
- Resolve and document any problem specimens
- Handle and dispose of medical and chemical waste
- Comply with applicable environmental health and safety policies and procedures
- Operate automated instrumentation under supervision if necessary
- Pack and ship specimens to proper testing facilities when required
- Monitor and manage laboratory communications including o Answering telephone and assisting caller with questions/concerns. o Laboratory Outlook email/fax folder. o Routing calls to appropriate personnel/leadership as needed.
- Manage and complete specimen add-on orders.
- Manage specimen storage and discard requirements.
- Assist with temperature review, monitoring, and recording as needed.
- Monitor and manage document storage.
- Support the administrative functions of the lab as required.
- Perform other miscellaneous laboratory duties as assigned and assist others as times allows.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Excellent time management. Able to prioritize and drive results with a high emphasis on quality and turnaround time
- Ability to work with a team and independently to achieve organizational goals
- Flexible to manage unanticipated changes
- Previous medical or production experience is preferred
- Proficient computer and typing skills
- Must pass standardized color vision test
- Comfortable handling human biological specimens including blood, urine and tissue samples
- Strong eye hand coordination in order to accurately identify specimens by touch and sight
- High level of attention to detail with the ability to problem solve
- Ability to read and interpret written information; write clearly and informatively; edits work for spelling and grammar. Ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; listens and gets clarification; responds well to questions; demonstrates group presentation skills; and participates in meetings.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Previous laboratory, medical, or production experience is preferred
- Phlebotomy Training (Diploma or Certificate) and/or successful completion of an accredited
Medical Assistant Program or equivalent training and experience preferred
- 1 Year of phlebotomy experience, preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Ability to sit, use hands and fingers, talk or hear, and smell continually. Ability to stand, walk and reach frequently. Ability to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch occasionally.
- Ability to stand/walk/sit up to eight hours per day: stoop, bend, twist, lift greater than 25lbs and push/pull up to 150lbs.
- Clinical setting: exposure to communicable disease, medical preparations and other conditions common to a clinical environment.
- Typing, computer work, filing
