Job description

Ferryboat Deckhand I:

Performs as deckhand of motor ferry vessels transporting crew members, public vehicles and passengers. Work requires constant contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Ferryboat Deck Hand II:

Performs as deckhand of motor ferry vessels transporting crew members, public vehicles and passengers. Work requires constant contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Ferryboat Deckhand III: 

Performs as second deckhand of motor ferry vessels transporting crew members, public vehicles and passengers. Work requires constant contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

Ferryboat Deckhand I: 

  • Assists in the daily inspection of the operating condition of all emergency firefighting, lifesaving and childbirth equipment on the vessel.
  • Assists in the repair or renovation of motor ferry vessels as directed.
  • Attends to passenger needs and performs cleanup and maintenance duties.
  • Ensures strict compliance with the Federal Waters Pollution Control Act and the Federal Communications Commission Communications Act of 1934.
  • Participates in periodic all hands drills and emergency exercises.
  • Performs deck evolutions, operates safety gates and vehicle loading ramps, directs, spaces, parks and blocks vehicles and maintains security about the decks.
  • Reports all observations, actions and/or matters affecting the stability, operational capacity, safety and welfare of the vessel, crew, passengers, vehicles and other public properties to the captain or first deckhand.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Ferryboat Deckhand II:

  • Conducts the daily inspection of the operating condition of all emergency fire fighting, lifesaving and childbirth equipment on the vessel.
  • Stands lookout watch and assists ferryboat captain in maneuvering vessels in high-density traffic areas under all weather and sea conditions in accordance with the Inland Navigation Rules of the Road and the rules of good seamanship.
  • Assists in the repair or renovation of motor ferry vessels as directed.
  • Attends to passenger needs and performs cleanup and maintenance duties.
  • Ensures strict compliance with the Federal Waters Pollution Control Act and the Federal Communications Commission Communications Act of 1934.
  • Participates in periodic all hands drills and emergency exercises.

Ferryboat Deckhand III:

  • May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.
  • Serves as loading supervisor when working as first deckhand.
  • Performs duties as first deckhand, and as required as a ferryboat oiler.
  • Conducts the daily inspection of the operating condition of all emergency fire fighting, lifesaving and childbirth equipment on the vessel.
  • Participates in periodic all hands drills and emergency exercises.
  • Performs deck evolutions, operates safety gates and vehicle loading ramps, directs, spaces, parks and blocks vehicles and maintains security about the decks.
  • Reports all observations, actions and/or matters affecting the stability, operational capacity, safety and welfare of the vessel, crew, passengers, vehicles and other public properties to the captain or first deckhand.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ferryboat Deckhand I:

Education: No education required

Experience: No experience required

Ferryboat Deckhand II: 

Education: No education required

Experience: 1 year in Ferry deckhand-related work
(Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part time equivalent)

Ferryboat Deckhand II: 

Education: No education required

Experience: 3 years in Ferry deckhand-related work(Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part time equivalent)

Ferryboat Deckhand I, II, and III: 

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have or obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) at time of application 
  • Vessel Crew Member Certificate 
  • USCG-Mer Mar Doc-Ord Seaman/Wi (within 90 days from date of hire)


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Merchant Mariner Document Ordinary Seaman or Able Body Seaman Special or greater.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Ferryboat Deckhand I, II, and III:

  • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
  • Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise
  • Subject to vibration
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation
  • Subject to air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Works frequently in small/crawl spaces; manholes; areas that can cause claustrophobia
  • Works in narrow aisles or passageways
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
