Qualifications: Valid Illinois Professional Educators License (PEL) with a Special Education endorsement.
Reports To: Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Director of Special Education
Evaluation: As defined by PERA requirements
Work Calendar: Full-Time employment of 200 days or as determined contractually
Position Goal: The Special Education Coordinator coordinates the District's Special Education program to ensure the provision of needed services for students with disabilities. The Special Education Coordinator also provides individualized educations
programs and 504 plans to meet the needs of all students with disabilities and ensures compliance with all state federal and local requirements while providing consultation to staff, students, and parents.
The Special Education Coordinator shall be responsible for the following duties and perform other duties that may be assigned by the administration
Superintendent/Board:
  • Observe and adhere to all Board of Education policies and regulations, and all administrative rules and procedures

  • Attend Board meetings when necessary to provide supportive materials and information

  • Follow all State of Illinois codes relative to the requirements of the Special Education

  • Communicate program initiatives and objectives to the Administration, Staff and Community

  • Provide reports when requested or required

Building:
  1. Coordinate Special Education services at the building level

  • Overseeing/ managing a caseload of Special Education students and students with 504 plans and the implementation of their IEP/504 plans at schools in the district and outside placements

  • Ensuring appropriate delivery of both Special Education instruction and related services as stipulated on IEPs/504 plans

  • Coordinating special transportation as a related service as stipulated on IEPs/504 plans

  • Ensuring compliance with all Federal laws and regulations relating to students with IEPs/504 plans and students referred to Special Education

  • Ensuring the services provided personal are of high quality, provided in the LRE and are aligned with students' IEPs/504 plans

  • Effectively communicating to parents and Special Education process including a process for referrals, evaluations, annual IEPs/ 504 and re-evaluations well as parental rights granted by IDEA

  • Facilitating IEP meetings using a strengths-based and family-centered approach

  • Coordinating with students to ensure all documents are completed in a timely manner (according to state, local, policies and Connect with prior to meetings. Connect with team members (including parents) are prepared for the content of the meeting

  • Coordinating with the Special Education team to complete IEP progress reports and provide IEP progress reports to parents/ guardians

  • Maintaining student files (paper and electronic) according to school, State and Federal standards

  • Providing training and technical assistance to case managers, teachers, related service providers and support service professionals on all aspects of cases management: use of computer systems for the Special Education process, writing of goal writing, progress reports, annual reviews, and parent communication

  • Ensuring IEPs are developmentally appropriate, curriculum/standards-based, strength-based, and relevant to individual students

  1. Pre-referral consultation/intervention/MTSS, including but not limited to:

  • Being a standing member of the pre-referral team within the assigned school(s)

  • Observing the student(s)

  • Serving as an instructional intervention specialist who plans intervention and individual education programs on the basis of all the necessary curriculum components and implements or assists with the implementation of the intervention

  • Participating in ongoing training/in-servicing related to job duties

  • As part of the team, the coordinator will when necessary, participate in: parent conferences, classroom observations, consultations with local agencies, extended IEP team meetings,

case follow-ups, consultation with teachers, the other team members assigned to the case and social workers
  • Participating in other duties based on the needs of students

and programs. These may include teacher in-service, counseling, screening of students (preschool, etc.), parent groups, research of ongoing programs, and development of new programs
  • Advocating for Special Education with school leadership.

  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Superintendent or designee

  • Develop a positive working relationship with administration, staff, students and parents

  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with others

  • Understand and adapt to a variety of situations

  • Assume responsibility for personal and professional growth and development by attending meetings, workshops, conferences and continuing education classes as related to Special Education

  • Keep abreast of current trends in the field of Special Education and translate appropriate research to practical applications in the school.

  • Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect District equipment and facilities

  • Be knowledgeable of and adhere to the District Safety Plan
