About the Department:The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest-rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. The hospital staffs over twenty clinical services with board-certified specialists that are nationally and even internationally renowned, ensuring the VH is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. Patients benefit from the combined expertise of multiple specialists utilizing a team approach to patient health care. Each year, nearly 30,000 patients are treated in the VH. The VH provides compassionate care, state-of-the-art specialty healthcare, expert clinical instruction for 4th-year veterinary students from the College of Veterinary Medicine, and ongoing investigation of innovative techniques and procedures to further advance the field of veterinary medicine.
Essential Job Duties:Duties include but are not limited to:
- Provide technical support for the Small Animal Primary Care Service.
- Assist veterinarians and veterinary students with examinations, treatments, animal handling, restraint, surgery circulation, and anesthesia.
- Responsible for breaking down various technical tasks into steps and effectively articulating to students how to perform these tasks (anesthesia, dentistry, venipuncture, catheter placement, recovery from sedation, etc.)
- Responsible for identifying areas where students will need additional help/improvement.
- Administer treatments, perform lab tests, and maintain medical records.
- Induce, prep, and monitor patients while under anesthesia for surgery and dentistry.
- Perform diagnostic imaging such as radiographs.
- Maintain supplies and equipment, including repair schedules.
- Ensure compliance with all Infectious disease protocols.
- Perform administrative role for service; inventory control, correct billing, scheduling, supply ordering/purchasing, monitoring treatment sheets for accuracy, and ensuring good communication and collaboration with all ancillary services and other areas of the hospital.
- Organize, set up, and break down procedural laboratories for student teaching; including but not limited to set up of equipment, lab materials, and cadavers.
- Clean and sterilize instruments.
- Conducts responsibilities with a focus on Fear-free and Feline-Friendly Practices.
- Other duties as assigned.
Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.
- Previous veterinary technician experience
- Excellent technical skills, ex. must be fluent in sample collection, venipuncture, catheter placement and restraint
- MS Word, Excel
- Good team player
- Excellent communication and organization skills
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Desire to teach 4th year veterinary students
- Must be able to work independently
- Registered Veterinary Technician
- Previous veterinary technician experience in a clinical setting.
- Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT).
- Must be eligible to become registered in the state of North Carolina
