High Point University's Siegfried Leadership Fellows Program is a highly selective, innovative experience designed to educate and empower aspiring leaders to learn about themselves, understand others, be civically involved and maximize their personal and professional success. Job Description
A Supplemental Instruction Leader (SIL) plays a crucial role in supporting the instructional and administrative functions of an academic department within a university or college. SILs are typically enrolled in a graduate program and work under the supervision of faculty members to assist in teaching, grading, and other educational activities.
Job Location/ Hours Required
The candidate will perform most/all job duties in (Fine Arts Auditorium with the EXP 1111 course ). Hours may vary depending on the job requirements; however, the total number of hours a student employee may work per week is 20 hours. This position requires up to 10 hours per week.
Responsibilities:
- Assisting Professors: SILs work closely with course instructors or professors to help plan and deliver instructional materials. They may assist the course instructor in designing lesson plans, creating assignments, taking and recording attendance, and developing course content.
- Attending Lectures: SILs attend all course lectures and take notes (or write supplemental notes). At the discretion of the instructor and SIL, these notes can be shared with students.
- Leading Discussion Sections: SILs often lead smaller discussions or lab sections for larger lecture-based courses. They facilitate discussions, answer student questions, and help clarify course concepts under the supervision of a lead
- Hosting Review Sessions: SILs often plan and host review sessions prior to tests and final exams. They might also hold a session after an exam to explain the questions students missed.
- Assessment and Feedback: They provide constructive feedback on assignment drafts to students to help them improve their understanding of the subject matter. Under the supervision of the lead instructor for the course, SILs may be responsible for grading small assignments that require little discretion in assigning a grade (e.g., quizzes with clear right and wrong answers; short essays in which answering the prompt is sufficient to earn credit; logs of activities).
- Holding Office Hours: SILs hold regular office hours where students can come to ask questions, seek clarification on course content, or discuss assignments. This provides additional support outside of the classroom.
- Providing Individual Assistance: SILs may offer one-on-one or small group assistance to students who are struggling with the material. This can include explaining concepts, reviewing study strategies, and addressing concerns.
- Preparing and Delivering Presentations: In some cases, SILs may be responsible for preparing and delivering lectures or presentations. These presentations occur under the direct supervision of the course instructor.
- Assisting with Course Materials: SILs help manage and distribute course materials, such as textbooks, online resources, and supplementary materials. They may also assist in maintaining the course website or online learning platform.
- Monitoring Exams: SILs, under the direct supervision of the course instructor, often help proctor and monitor exams to ensure a fair and secure testing environment. They may also assist in handling any logistical issues that arise during exams.
- Attending Meetings: SILs may attend department meetings, staff meetings, and training sessions to stay informed about course updates, curriculum changes, and departmental policies.
- Maintaining Ethical Standards: SILs must adhere to ethical standards, including maintaining academic integrity, treating students fairly, and respecting diversity and inclusivity in the classroom.
