Title: Shelter Advocate – Weekend I
Reports to: Shelter Coordinator and/or Executive Director
Status: Full-time, non-exempt

Job Summary
The Shelter Advocate’s overall responsibilities include providing a safe, orderly environment for residents, responding to calls on the crisis hotline and managing food and other donations.
The specific duties of the Shelter Advocate are as follows:
- Admits and orients new guests to the shelter; Implements departure procedures when guests exit the shelter program
- Provides advocacy and life skills to guests
- Organizes food and donations for guests use
- Oversees cleanliness and organization of shelter according to guidelines required
- Cleans refrigerator (all areas), clean top of upright freezer and empties cigarette butt cans-monthly
- Insures that the shelter is secure by locking all exits and using alarm system as instructed
- Assists all guests that are moving in and out; if guests exit shelter program on weekend, Weekend IShelter Advocate must make sure room is properly cleaned.
- Room must be cleaned before leaving or Monday Day shift begins.
- Mediates and resolves disputes between guests if they occur
- Maintain, read, and update phone logs, crisis hotline sheets, daily shift reports, daily case notes and guests files; Maintains residence census.
- Assists guests with referrals and setting appointments; documents contacts
- Provides direct emergency service on weekends according to “on-call” rotation schedule
- Assists Shelter Coordinator with volunteers when at the shelter
- Other duties as assigned by Shelter Coordinator and/or Executive Director
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
- Demonstrated understanding of domestic violence as it affects women, children and families. This may have been obtained through experience or training.
- Ability to use effective communication skills required for position
- Ability to work with a cultural and diverse individuals and groups
- Ability to compile basic reports
- Computer literacy required: Microsoft Office/ Word; Excel. Must know how to

communicate via e-mail.
- Ability to implement emergency procedures when needed.
- Demonstrated Team player who works well with staff, guests and volunteers.
- Must be self-motivated and able to work unsupervised.
Hours: The Weekend Advocate (I) position is part- time non-exempt position.
It is understood the employee will work forty hour (40) shift every other weekend. The Weekend Advocate (I) will report for work on Saturday at 7:00 a.m. and stay until 7:00 a.m. Monday to meet the requirements of the position.
Training: All Turning Point of South Arkansas employees must complete five (5) hours shadow training plus, fifteen hours of core domestic violence training conducted by the Arkansas Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ACADV) and four hours of ACADV ethics training within the first 9 months of employment. Annually, after the first year of employment, employees are required to attend ten hours of continuing education and one five hour professional ethics class every two years that will assist in effectively performing their duties.
Working Conditions:
- Occasional out-of-town travel for training.
- Use of personal vehicle required.
- Travel must be approved by Executive Director.
