General Summary

The Sheet Metal Mechanic will plan, lay out, fabricate, assemble, install, and repair Sheet Metal parts, equipment, and products, utilizing knowledge of working characteristics of metallic and nonmetallic materials, machining, and layout techniques, using hand tools, power tools, machines, and equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, or product specifications to determine sequence and methods of fabricating, assembling, and installing Sheet Metal products.
  • Select gauge and type of Sheet Metal according to product specifications.
  • Layout and mark dimensions and reference lines on material applying knowledge of shop mathematics and layout techniques.
  • Set up and operate fabricating equipment and hand tools to cut, bend, block, and form, or straighten materials.
  • Trim, file, grind, buff, and smooth surfaces, using hand tools and portable power tools.
  • Weld, solder, bolt, rivet, screw, clip, caulk, or bond component parts to assemble products, using hand tools, power tools, and equipment.
  • Install assemblies in supportive framework according to blueprints, using hand tools, power tools, and lifting and handling devices.
  • Inspect assemblies and installation for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments, such as calipers, scales, dial indicators, gauges, and micrometers.
  • Fabricate ducts for HVAC systems to ensure maximum efficiency.
  • Fabricate soffits, rain gutters, down spouts, and various metal roofing systems.
  • Ensure appropriate materials are available to complete the job.
  • Inspects work in progress and finished products to ensure work done meets specifications.
  • Maintain and update departmental records documenting project activities.
  • Fabricate and alter parts using shears, hammers, punchers, or drills.
  • Maneuver completed units into place and anchor unit as appropriate.
  • Assure efficient and economical utilization of materials, improvement of methods, and elimination of wasteful practices within the department.

Knowledge, Experience and Skill Requirements

  • Ability to perform most complex and unusual tasks of the craft without supervision.
  • Ability to perform work of the craft in a rapid and efficient manner under extreme conditions.
  • Must be able to perform work safely under hazardous conditions.
  • Must be able to field measure and field fabricate simple fittings.
  • Must have the ability to measure fittings for shop input.
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Five or more years of Sheet Metal experience required.

    Working Environment

    • Must be able to lift 50 lbs., squat, bend, stoop and kneel for short periods, climb a ladder, stand for long periods of time, constant arm extensions.
    • Occasional exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, but none to the point of being disagreeable. May involve minor safety hazards where likely result would be cuts, bruises, etc.
