Job Summary: This position is for a Precision Glass Molding (PGM) setup within the PGM department. PGM is a unique technology in the optics industry, which utilizes a high temperature glass compression molding process to produce precision glass lenses and components. In basic terms, the process is performed by heating a polished lens blank (called a preform) in the molding machine until it softens, and then pressing it between two precision tool inserts (dies) to form a lens. The process is complex and takes significant on-the-job training and practice to learn and master it. This job requires the highest level of skill of all jobs within the molding technology and the most training. The person hired for this job will go through a lengthy training process which will start with the basics of the technology and work toward the more difficult tasks. The first stage of training will be to learn to operate (load and unload) the molding machines and record data, followed by training in lens inspection and physical measurement techniques. Following success in these areas, training will begin for machine setup which includes the skills necessary to setup production jobs by making the proper machine and mold adjustments and learning the specific setup process for each job. A series of molding support processes will also be learned. In-process troubleshooting skills will also be developed to insure that the quality requirements are maintained by inspecting parts visually and with a variety of measurement devices. Once certified as a setup, the person will be held accountable for timely machine Set Ups, part/tool quality and machine performance. Person may also instruct, train or assist less experienced operators/Set Ups when proficient at these tasks.
