About WSDOT
Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project.

The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking an IT Support Technician to serve as a Server Support Intern. This position will focus on developing a tool that will be used to identify applications and resources on our web servers. The successful student will identify any dependencies across our webservers and document any improvement recommendations. Additionally, this position will categorize and document all equipment that is subject to surplus in our Maple Park data center. The student in this role must possess exceptional communication skills as this position will collaborate with various teams such as Communications, Enterprise Applications, and Webmaster to identify the resources used on each of the Agency's web servers.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Server Support Intern will:
  • Capture the interdependencies between web servers, servers, and other resources.
  • Assist in the creation of a sustainable tool to maintain and update findings and highlight discovered interdependencies.
  • Document insights and recommendations on areas of improvements identified by the collaboration efforts.
  • Collaborate with Technology Services Division subject matter experts to identify the surplus process and equipment to be surplus.
  • Collaborate with Technology Services Division subject matter experts on the policy and processes for equipment to be disposed.
  • Collaborate with Technology Services Division subject matter experts on the policy and processes for equipment to be destroyed.
  • Complete documentation required for equipment surplus, destruction, and/or removal from WSDOT asset management application.

Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of a bachelor's degree program in Computer Science, or related field at an accredited college or university.
  • Working knowledge of Windows Operating Systems.
  • Working knowledge of Azure.
  • Foundational knowledge of Internet Information Services (IIS).
  • Foundational knowledge of Web Application development and deployment.
  • Foundational knowledge of Data Center operations.
  • Foundational knowledge of server and storage hardware.
  • Exceptional documentation and communication skills.
  • A valid driver's license.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Working knowledge of Internet Information Services (IIS).
  • Working knowledge of Web Application Development and Deployment.
  • Working knowledge of Data Center Operations.
  • Working knowledge of Server and Storage hardware.

  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
  • Internships are temporary employment opportunities. This internship opportunity is expected to last up to five (5) months.
  • This position offers flexible/hybrid remote work options.
  • This position will be expected to travel between the ELG (Tumwater) and Headquarters (Olympia) buildings.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
