Our company is focused on inventing the future. We are looking for a UX Research Scientist to answer vision science and visual ergonomics questions in the AR/VR product space, with a lens towards visual quality, comfort, and user health and safety. We are looking for a scientist with excellent communication and collaboration skills and scientific background in one or more of the following areas: human perception, cognition, human factors, human-computer interaction, and user experience.
As a UX Research Scientist, you will be working on defining, assessing and enhancing the form, function and dynamics of our hardware and software. You must be a data expert, able to creatively develop metrics for investigating novel challenges in a variety of areas, including sensors, displays, virtual environments, software UX , and more. You will need to break down ambiguous problems and master research methods, including but not limited to, design of experiments, psychophysics & threshold detection, metric development, and relevant health & safety research approaches.
The right candidate will be passionate about understanding people, and curious about the evolving complex relationship among humans’ sensorimotor and cognitive systems and the novel hardware and software technologies in development.
A successful candidate will prove highly effective at communicating outcomes, converting research insights into actionable product engineering & software development recommendations, and collaborating closely with cross functional partners to help shape critical product and technology decisions across the product design and development life-cycle.
Job Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with cross-functional product teams to identify visual quality, comfort, and health & safety goals and envision needs, create theoretical frameworks, and develop metrics and methodologies for investigating novel challenges
- Develop research studies that utilize appropriate scientific methods, which may include experimental design, psychophysics and threshold detection, behavioral analytics, expert review, and other relevant safety & comfort research approaches
- Develop and track metrics for visual quality, comfort, and user safety and performance of fundamental tasks such as spatial navigation, object interaction, and more while using AR or VR products
- Analyze rich and multidimensional data, develop descriptive and analytical models, and shape actionable insights from research findings
- Effectively communicate outcomes and insights from studies
- Support decision-making and setting specifications for our products
- Drive measurable positive impact on user experience, comfort, and safety in novel experiences
- Create close partnerships with a variety of leadership, research and product stakeholders to ensure a broad understanding of the product needs and priorities while driving user-focused goals
Minimum Qualifications:
- Demonstrated scientific background in psychometrics, human behavior and physiology, and applying such knowledge in analyzing and interpreting relevant human behaviors associated with novel systems
- 2+ years of hands-on experience conducting research with human participants in an academic or industrial setting
- Proven track record of rigorous scientific research, including development of metrics for user behavior and subjective experience
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with individuals who span a diversity of roles and professional backgrounds
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working on product research focusing on perception and human factors and their implications on visual quality, comfort or safety
- 2+ years of experience in experimental design, psychophysics, and inferential statistics
- Experience in conducting research on virtual or augmented environments and their design
- Training and experience in physiological measures (such as galvanic skin response/electrodermal activity, electroencephalography/EEG, or electromyography/EMG)
- Experience in research across full product life-cycle

Additional Skills & Qualifications:
Need to have worked on behavioral research in some sort of way so not strictly surveys or qualitative questionnaires- thinking about how to measure peoples responses (or measuring action)
Either behavioral observation or measuring behavior like reaching or walking or some sort of action response
Vision science perception and action, some psychology or biomechanics, bioengineering
A lot of it is working with software product teams to figure out what their needs and research support needs are. Translating research findings into recommendations or mitigation strategies. How to make something better or safer. A lot of the role is not running the study or recruiting participants but higher Research Scientist level bringing subject matter expertise to figure out if you need to run a study or if previous experience that would help with those question
Generally we are research partners with various product teams- the questions we are asking and answering tend to be around user safety predominately rather than usability or user experience.
Day to day responsibilities would include attending certain product meetings with various product teams that would be a mix of research PM, eng, drafting out research briefs. Creation of research studies to answer questions. Coordinating with a vendor for that research to happen and then translating insights from vendor findings into actionable product insights.
Human movement or modeling data visualization that would be good
Not working with participants - the likelihood of them running the study
High focus on people's ability to visualize data and interpret data and have product sense
Create the protocol but less so having to run studies
