Hybrid
At Collins Aerospace, we're working side-by-side with our customers and partners to dream, design and deliver solutions that redefine the future of our industry. By reaching across the markets, we serve and drawing on our vast portfolio of expertise, we are making the most powerful concepts in aerospace a reality every day. As the industry faces new challenges and embraces new technologies, Collins is collaborating and innovating with our customers to bring big ideas to life. And together, we're redefining the future of aerospace.
Are you looking for a new design challenge? Do you want to make a difference? Collins Aerospace is seeking a Senior UX/UI Engineer to join our Advanced User Experience (AUX) Team to apply UX design solutions to solve complex problems for the end users of our decision-critical systems.
This position can be located in Richardson, TX or Dulles, VA.
Note: This position is contingent on a contract award.
At Collins, our UX/UI Engineers solve the most challenging User-Centered Design (UCD) problems for mission critical systems using iterative design methods. A Collins UX/UI Design Engineer is responsible for the human experience of operators who use our software and systems to accomplish high-consequence missions. Therefore, familiarity with both UCD and Human Factors Engineering methods, especially within areas such as cognition and decision-making, is important. UX/UI engineers explore user goals, tasks, workflows, and information needs within the operational environment, and use what they learn to tailor system design to meet the needs of the user, the task, and the mission, within the constraints of the customer requirements and the business value provided. They collaborate with development scrum teams as the advocate for the user to translate user research findings into efficient, effective, and usable software solutions that end users WANT to use. Our Advanced UX Team solves the most challenging UX issues for high consequence missions. This includes applying the latest scientific research for effective Human to Machine (H2M) teaming with automation, including systems that contain advanced Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) capabilities.
We are looking for team members with the passion and desire to improve user experiences and design. From navigation to information architecture and widgets to applications, we need versatile digital design experts who are committed to delivering first class experiences that are bold, creative, and innovative. The UX/UI Engineer will:
  • Advocate for the user, not the design.
  • Support projects by creating interactive design wireframes that facilitate user testing and iterative design.
  • Write Agile development user stories (JIRA, etc.) for design implementation with Conditions of Satisfaction specific to the design.
  • Develop wireframes (potentially data-driven) for customer systems using wireframing tools like Axure RP.
  • Plan and conduct usability tests to collect the best possible data from limited opportunities for user engagements.
  • Collaborate with front-end development team to socialize design patterns and guidance. Advocate for designs that deliver best value to the user while considering ease of development and reuse.
  • Organize essential tools, templates, scripts, patterns and styles into a version-controlled directory for sharing across teams.
  • Research and train colleagues on current wireframing trends, technologies and techniques. Bring your industry expertise in design wireframing to expand our team capabilities.
  • Understand our varied audiences and create and mature a design vocabulary that addresses their unique needs.
  • Understand that design is iterative and critique/refinement are constants in the quest for the best design.
  • Maintain a current understanding of relevant government and international UI standards and practices (e.g., MILSTD 1472H, ISO 9241-110/210).

Responsibilities to Anticipate:
  • Perform user research to uncover user goals, decisions and information requirements:
    • Perform UX analysis to understand the requirements, constraints and opportunities for the operator.
    • Document insights in standardized analytic artifacts that suit the needs of the program.
  • Perform UX/UI design tasks in agile design sprints:
    • Write JIRA stories to document user needs and system requirements.
    • Develop interactive design wireframes in Axure RP (or other interactive wireframing tools) to meet JIRA story requirements.
    • Present designs to stakeholders for feedback.
    • Provide constructive feedback on others' designs/implementation.
    • Support development of style guide and design in compliance to style guide.
  • Support usability testing:
    • Prepare for usability testing by defining user workflows and designing usability tests.
    • Collect data at usability test events as needed (possible travel required).
    • Organize & track completion of recommendations and requests from usability test events.
  • Prepare presentation materials.
  • Verify design compliance.
  • Write JIRA stories to clarify implementation of design, or to resolve compliance issues.

Qualifications/Experience Needed:
  • Typically requires five or more (5+) years of experience in interaction, UI, and graphic design (3+ years with an advanced degree).
  • Experience with Axure RP, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe XD, Figma or other design tools.
  • Familiarity with design artifacts like Personas, Journey Maps, Cognitive Task Analysis, Wireframes.
  • Portfolio to demonstrate prior design experience.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Active security clearance.
  • Degree in Human Factors, Interaction Design, Design Science, Visual Communications and Technology, Graphic Design, Usability Engineering, HCI, HSI, or similar design or Human Science disciplines. Advanced degree is a plus.
  • A current understanding of relevant government and international human engineering standards and practices related to UI design, and familiarity with the science behind these standards, (e.g., MILSTD 1472H, ISO 9241-110/210)
  • Experience with user research and design for high consequence missions.
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team that includes UX researchers, UI/UI designers, and software developers.
  • Experience with modern software development methods as part of an Agile software development team.
  • UI software development and implementation experience in CSS, Bootstrap, JavaScript, Vue, React, Angular, etc.
