Overview:
GitHub Technical Writers use their deep understanding of GitHub’s products and customers to research, design, publish, and maintain user-focused technical documentation.
In this role, you’ll report to a Docs Content Manager and work cooperatively with the Docs team to produce task-based, user-facing help content that’s tailored to developers and published on GitHub Docs. We’re looking specifically for someone with the skills to contribute to the Actions documentation, although you will have opportunities to work on other areas of the docs.
All Docs Content writers should be adept communicators, able to provide reviews on the content their team members create. They must be empathetic as a writer, able to put themselves in the user’s position and help solve problems before they’re asked. In this role, you’ll create a range of content from getting started guides to in-depth documentation on technical features.
The Docs Content team is highly distributed and we embrace an environment of asynchronous communication. You’ll need strong communication skills and the ability to build working relationships with coworkers in locations around the globe.

Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to educate customers about products through the design and development of content.
Engage and address feedback from customers and drive content and/or GH docs investments.
Apply and assist with creating principles to develop relevant, technically accurate content designed for a variety of users.
Proactively apply approval and review processes.
Develop skills and share information necessary for creating and delivering content (large groups such as brown bags, guides, informal meetings).
Negotiate partnerships with stakeholders and advocate for telemetry for implementation.
Drive collaborative efforts with relevant cross-functional stakeholders to understand and align content with project goals.
Envision content experiences of the future by observing customers, and working with product and research teams.
Seek out opportunities to engage with partners on research studies to define a case to incorporate actionable insights into content across a product area or GitHub Docs
Responsibilities:
Content Creation: Applies and assists with creating principles to develop relevant, technically accurate content designed for a variety of users. Develops content plans that bridge product platforms/experiences and aligns with product strategy. Identifies opportunities for collaboration with cross-functional teams to support/execute on content plans. Collaborates with cross-functional stakeholders (e.g., engineering, research, design, product) to understand products/content areas/features and user journeys/jobs-to-be-done (JTBD) to author user-centered content. Develops content by first understanding prototypes and ideation of features for product/content/feature areas. Takes on experiential stretch goals to increase expertise within their area. Collaborates with and manages the contributions of subject matter experts to author or improve content. Educate content contributors on the content creation workflow and tools. May assist content contributors with the usage of content creation tools or processes. Is responsible for pulling together data and insights, to drive projects across teams and organizations to deliver scenario-based content that spans multiple product areas and groups.
Content Improvement: Proactively applies approval and review processes. Uses metrics and/or user feedback to assess shipped content for potential improvements and to incorporate changes. Creates standards and guidelines for improving content. Collaborates with stakeholders on the testing and building of customer scenarios.
Stakeholder Collaboration: Drives collaborative efforts with relevant cross-functional stakeholders (e.g., engineers, product managers, marketing, user experience [UX], design, research) to understand and align content with project goals. Sets accurate expectations for content delivery and helps lead peers in a timely manner. Manages relationships and expectations with stakeholders to build rapport and credibility while advising management on project status. Provides project input and drives stakeholders using deep knowledge to achieve content-related project goals and influence
changes. Drives communication between content and stakeholder teams. Negotiates and schedules deadlines.
Tools and Operations: Develops skills and shares information necessary for creating and delivering content (large groups such as brown bags, guides, informal meetings). Collaborates with other teams to drive efficiency in content creation and delivery. Masters the tools and processes required for content development and publishing. Identifies opportunities, plans, drives, and executes to improve efficiencies of processes and leads improvements.
Metrics and Insights: Negotiates partnerships with stakeholders and advocates for telemetry for implementation. Identifies and uses metrics to assess whether content solved the customer's needs, and develops new methods and approaches to the content. Uses metrics as part of measuring customer satisfaction and/or business impact after content is published. Partners with cross-functional teams to leverage other insights; measures the content impact and ensures it aligns with overall business goals. Reviews dashboards for trends and ensures feedback is incorporated into content strategy and user experiences.
Required Qualifications:
7+ years experience in writing, content design, content strategy, UX design,information technology (IT), coding/programming, or related field
information technology, coding/programming, or related field
o OR equivalent experience.
- 1+ year(s) project leadership/management experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 3+ years project leadership/management experience.
- 3+ years experience in a related technical field.

These pay ranges are intended to cover roles based across the United States. An individual's base pay depends on various factors including geographical location and review of experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant. At GitHub certain roles are eligible for benefits and additional rewards, including annual bonus and stock. These rewards are allocated based on individual impact in role. In addition, certain roles also have the opportunity to earn sales incentives based on revenue or utilization, depending on the terms of the plan and the employee's role.
