Senior Site EHS Engineer

Principal Responsibilities

  • Partners closely with site leadership and management staff to create a safe working environment and minimize operational risk.
  • Evaluates emerging state and federal regulatory requirements and establishes appropriate EHS programs and processes to ensure ongoing compliance. Develops and implements EHS programs in support of site requirements and global EHS goals.
  • Analyzes and evaluates EHS performance to identify and implement opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Provides EHS oversight and support to construction projects to ensure contractor compliance with safety rules and company policies. Works closely with contractors and project management to evaluate planned construction activities and review safety work plans to ensure safe design, safety and fire code compliance, and environmental protection.
  • Provides oversight and ongoing conformance and certification to site EHS management systems including ISO14001 and ISO45001. Leads EHS management system reviews and EHS audit and inspection processes to ensure regulatory compliance and conformance to the client’s requirements.
  • Able to lead/champion investigations involving serious incidents.
  • Interfaces with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies to ensure EHS compliance obligations are met. Ensures compliance with environmental permits and regulatory reporting requirements. Represents the site during regulatory agency inspections, audits and inquiries.
  • Establishes, mentors and supports the Site Safety organizations including Safety Committee, Wellness team, Ergonomics and Environmental/Sustainability teams. Facilitates EHS continuous improvement project teams in the use of safety analysis tools and methods.
  • Performs EHS risk assessments of new equipment, processes and projects to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, reduce the potential for injury and minimize environmental liability.
  • Provides oversight of the site emergency preparedness and planning process, procedures, and the formation and training of an emergency response team.
  • Oversees industrial hygiene programs including development of sampling plans and implementation of process improvements and controls to minimize employee exposures to hazardous substances.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of federal, state and local environmental health and safety laws and regulations including environmental permitting, emergency planning and fire protection/life safety requirements
  • Expertise with ergonomics, behavior-based safety, industrial hygiene, and safety analysis methods (i.e. job safety incident analysis, safety FMEA, safety kaizen, LEAN tools) and control strategies
  • Knowledge and experience implementing EHS management systems (i.e. ISO14001, ISO45001)
  • Effective training techniques and skills
  • Well-developed interpersonal, written communication, presentation and facilitation skills with ability to partner with all levels of the organization
  • Ability to collect and analyze data, assess risk factors and identify solutions to complex problems
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to work on a flexible work schedule including an on-call basis
  • Computer proficiency in software applications required for analyzing, monitoring, reporting and presentations.

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental health and safety or related science field with equivalent related experience in environmental health and safety.
  • 10 years’ experience in environmental health and safety management with experience in biopharmaceutical or chemical industries.
  • Professional certification (CSP or CIH) preferred.
