As a Senior Site Reliability Engineer, you will be responsible for engineering solutions to address day-to-day maintenance, administration, and reliability of Internet-based and in store systems. This position will also help identify root causes of operational issues and partner with other team members to drive resolution. This role will be also responsible for planning and execution of work within the Starbucks Retail Technology team.
An effective Senior Site Reliability Engineer will be detail oriented, have solid technical understanding within the domain, can work independently, and is a team performer. Success will require collaboration, ingenuity, and passion to deliver results.
As a member of our team, you will play an important role in defining how we do reliability engineering. It will require you to learn, refine, and document systems and processes. Your experience with Service Level Indicators (SLIs), Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and error budgets will help us develop our practice. You will be data driven in pursuit of reliability. Most importantly, you will proactively build relationships and exceed expectations.
This role requires your A-Game: technical proficiency, experience in enterprise systems and the courage to drive change required. Summary of Key Responsibilities
Solution Design / Development
- Actively participates in design sessions, team planning, and backlog grooming
- Positively influences others to collaborate towards a single approach
- Participates in peer reviews using Git and can drive release process for a work item
- Creates or updates Chef recipes, and Jenkins pipeline configuration as needed
- Read, write, and implement automation to solve repetitive tasks
Production Support
- Provide 24*7 global support of services in rotating on-call rotation
- Create and maintain system and training documentation
- Represent team and act as point of escalation during a service interruption or planned maintenance
- Define, track, and alert on Service Level Indicators (SLIs), and Service Level Objectives (SLOs)
- Use New Relic, Splunk, and Pager Duty to identify, then resolve complex issues
- Drive root cause analysis, remediation, and planning after a service interruption
- Coordinate with team to deploy fixes, configuration changes, system patches, and certificate renewals
- Complete application server builds and database refreshes in both production and non-production environments
Basic Qualifications
- 6+ years supporting external, customer facing web services for a large site
- 6+ years managing Windows-based systems and services using IIS and MSSQL
- 6+ years using tools like Splunk, New Relic, or Pager Duty to support a large environment
- Outstanding troubleshooting, attention to detail, written and spoken communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with tools enabling automated testing and integration
- Experience in at least two relevant scripting or programming languages (Go, Python, Ruby, Perl, Shell, PowerShell, etc.)
- Familiarity with managing VIPs, pools, and members on F5 Big IP
- Experience defining Service Level Indicators (SLIs), and Service Level Objectives (SLOs)
- Experience hardening and maintaining secure systems
- Demonstrated knowledge of Agile/Lean methodologies
Ideal Qualifications
- Experience with performance tuning and capacity planning of an IIS site
- Experience automating alert and incident resolution
- Ability to produce system documentation, including system architecture, test plans and as-built documentation, all with attention to detail
