As a Senior Scientist II in Drug Delivery Sciences, you will be a key member of a talented, multidisciplinary, and cross-functional team to build cutting-edge new capabilities for the sustained delivery of biologics and advance product candidates through early R&D. The primary focus of this position is develop and characterize protein-based delivery systems. The ideal candidate has a solid background and hands-on experience in protein formulation, characterization, and delivery technologies, has outstanding communication skills, and has the capacity to grow as part of a dynamic, high performing team.

Responsibilities:

• Independently plans, designs, coordinates, and executes formulation and drug product analytical experiments in alignment with project goals.


• Innovates novel Drug Delivery platforms to enable long-acting delivery of a diverse portfolio of biologics.


• Collaborates with Discovery to select candidate molecules for evaluation in delivery systems


• Designs and develops new formulations to support entry of new product candidates into development.


• Develops and utilizes analytical tools to characterize protein formulation and protein-excipient interactions.


• Provides technical leadership and demonstrates in-depth understanding of relevant scientific principles and literature to solve challenging problems.


• Represents function within cross-functional teams and may lead cross-functional teams to achieve project goals.


• Authors manuscripts for internal and external publication and presentations.


• Contributes to AbbVie's patent estate.


• Mentors junior staff and demonstrates sound technical and project leadership skills

Education and Experience

• A PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, bioengineering, pharmaceutical sciences, or a related field with at least 4 years of experience, or a MS with at least 10 years of relevant experience, or a BS with at least 12 years of relevant experience.

Essential Skills and Abilities:

• A thorough knowledge of protein formulation and characterization.


• Hands on experience in pharmaceutical analysis/characterization (including HPLC, ELISA, DSC, FTIR, SEC-MALS, GPC, rheology).


• Experience in developing protein delivery systems and evaluating technology landscape.


• Excellent scientific approach and communication skills, both oral and written, are prerequisites.


• Good interpersonal and team skills.


• A strong sense of urgency and ability to operate in a highly dynamic and fast-paced environment.


• A desire and capacity to learn, drive continuous improvement, and develop novel solutions to problems.
