Job description

The successful candidate will participate in automation strategy and lead the tactical implementation of laboratory automation projects focusing on analytical method and process development. The role will include laboratory implementation and support, with the remainder of responsibilities involving collaborating with vendors, stakeholders, and process/analytical development counterparts in the design, life-cycle management, and continuous improvement of automated workflows. The candidate should be experienced in analytical method development and laboratory automation, including working with robotic liquid handlers (e.g., Tecan, Hamilton, or Beckman) and lab automation schedulers (e.g., Cellario, Green Button Go).
Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop and deploy High Throughput analytical (HTA) methods to support AAV production processes;
  • Identify and implement operational improvements and novel technologies to improve AAV production processes and analysis of key quality attributes.
  • Participate in automation strategy and oversee the implementation of a lab automation project portfolio with a focus on analytical High Throughput method development and deployment.
  • Participate in the direct design and implementation of specific robotic systems according to defined specifications, working with automation vendors and functional area stakeholders to develop automated workflows.
  • Support end-user automated workflows through training, method development, analysis, error recovery, equipment troubleshooting, and maintenance.
  • Continuously monitor and improve established automation platforms and workflows to maximize reliability and efficiency.
  • Scale automated workflows of HTA methods from deployment on stand-alone robotic platforms to fully integrated workcells to meet the growing needs of the business.
  • Work seamlessly with cross functional stakeholders to help advance the AAV vector production portfolios.
  • Participate in project related teams and other internal/external collaborations.
  • Ensure that scientific and technical challenges are resolved in a timely manner.
  • Maintain all appropriate electronic laboratory records, author technical documents, protocols, and reports.
  • Perform routine data analysis and visualization for use in presentations, publications, and internal reports.
  • Contribute to a safe, efficient, and effective environment with personal accountability.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Desired Education and Skills:
  • PhD Degree in Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Engineering, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Virology, or a related field with 5+ years of related experience required.
  • Experience in method development and analysis using molecular biology, biochemical, and/or biophysical techniques
  • Experience with ddPCR, qPCR, ELISA, HPLC, CE, DLS, SDS-PAGE, Western Blot, Immunostaining, and cell-based assays is desirable
  • Working experience in gene therapy and/or viral vector biology and mammalian gene expression is desirable
  • Successful design and implementation of High Throughput analytical (HTA) methods and workflows is preferred
  • Extensive experience in the operation, development, life cycle management, and maintenance of robotic liquid handlers (e.g., Tecan, Hamilton or Beckman) is required
  • Experience in the operation, development, life cycle management, and maintenance of automated incubators (e.g., LiCONiC StoreX, QInstruments BioShake), storage solutions (e.g., HighRes AmbiStore/TundraStore), plate washers/dispensers (e.g., BioTek EL406, Certus Flex, Dispendix I.DOT, Formulatrix Tempest), themal cyclers (e.g., Inheco ODTC), and automated sample/plate management technologies (e.g., Azenta IntelliXcap/XPeel, Agilent PlateLoc) is preferred
  • Experience in the development and operation of integrated workcells (e.g., HighRes Biosolutions, Biosero) is a plus
  • Experience in programming/coding (e.g., Visual Basic, C++, R, MatLab, or Python programming), Design of Experiments (DoE), and knowledge of statistical software (e.g., JMP, GraphPad) and statistical techniques, such as equation fitting, outlier detection and control charting, are a plus.
  • Proven record of successfully planning experiments and executing projects in collaboration with internal or external stakeholders.
  • Strong computer, scientific, and organizational skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
