DEFINITION
Under general supervision, the Senior Recreation Leader will assist in recreation programs; supervise and provide feedback to part-time staff; train volunteers; supervise in the absence of full-time staff; attend trainings related to position; maintain and inventory equipment assigned to this position; provide exceptional customer service and do related work as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is a part time position in the Recreation position series. Although incumbents do not directly supervise other employees, they typically serve as lead workers over subordinate staff and are responsible for the more complex and difficult recreational support duties, including program recordkeeping and communications.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the class.
  • Provides exceptional customer service including: answering phones and providing information, meeting with members of the public to discuss programs, marketing programs and events, receiving and receipting fees and taking registration information, coordinating the rental of facilities, be familiar with department flyers and publications and be able to share accurate information with customers regarding department programs/services.
  • Plans, develops, conducts, supervises and manages a wide variety of recreation and educational programs and activities for participants of all ages including sports, contests, tournaments, games, special events, crafts, and other recreational activities.
  • Work with youth to develop and build basic skills with an emphasis on learning, fun, and sportsmanship, teach fundamentals of play and sportsmanship in recreational activities
  • Maintain a safe program environment for participants and staff
  • Monitor program compliance
  • Perform facility inspections, including maintaining and cleaning facilities
  • Be responsible for supervising part-time staff and operating a program or center in the absence of professional staff
  • Conduct or train subordinates and volunteers in leading recreational activities or assignments, properly administering computerized registration and facility reservations, and processing the paperwork or payments associated with the registration and reservation
  • Effectively and appropriately resolve conflicts
  • Prepare reports, evaluations, participant letters, quarterly reports, agendas, flyers, brochures, timelines, memorandums, and any other written communication as needed by supervisor; Create weekly and monthly calendars; organize and maintain accurate records
  • Organize and maintain accurate records of payment; exercise best practices in cash handling;
  • Take care of and maintain all equipment issued and inform supervisor when there are hazards or equipment replacement needs
  • Attend applicable training and orientations
  • Clearly and effectively communicate orally and in writing
  • Perform related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES
Knowledge of
  • Indoor/Outdoor program development techniques and processes.
  • Supervising children and staff in the following settings: sports, recreation, special events and child development
  • Public relations, promotions and marketing techniques;
  • Recreational trends;
  • Methods, practices, and equipment used in maintaining an effective recreation program;
  • Basic budgeting, accounting and purchasing practices and principles.
  • Policies, procedures, and regulations governing the conduct and safety of persons using equipment and facilities;
  • Effective instructional techniques;
  • Arts and crafts; Indoor and outdoor games for children
  • Basic office equipment
  • Windows based software

Ability to
  • Plan and organize recreation programs for children
  • Be a source of accurate information
  • Exercise good judgment, courtesy and tact
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, specifically participants, co-workers, and staff from partner agencies
  • Follow directions from a supervisor
  • Appear for work on time and in presentable uniform
  • Assist in cleaning and concisely both orally and in writing
  • Accept constructive criticism

Education
Equivalent to graduation from high school.
Experience
Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for acceptable job performance. Example combinations include equivalent to graduation from high school and two years of experience of increasing responsibility in education, recreation, or a closely related field.
Licenses/Certificates
  • Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license is required for those 21 years of age and older.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, certification from District provided CPR/First Aid Training

Employees must meet the following requirements, which are necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of this class:
Communicate orally and by telephone with management and co-workers and the public in face-to-face, one-to-one, and group settings; use office equipment such as computer terminals; sit for extended periods of time; have hearing and vision within normal ranges; carry, push, pull, reach, and lift up to 40 pounds; occasionally stoop, kneel, or crouch; sufficient manual dexterity to operate office equipment.

Jurupa Community Services District - Part Time, Non Benefitted
Part time employees who have worked for the District for 30 or more days receive 1 hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, with a maximum accrual of 48 hours, and usage limited to 24 hours of sick leave in a calendar year. Unused hours are carried over into the next calendar year.
