DEFINITION
Under direction, the Senior Recreation Leader is responsible for projects of the Recreation Division including senior and youth programs, summer activities, and special events, as well as supporting other critical administrative needs of the Department and Division.
Essential Functions
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
Trains, assigns, supervises and evaluates all recreation staff.
Orders inventory and equipment.
Coaches and supervises recreation participants and programs; assists with activity registration and scheduling; inventories, manages, and distributes equipment; may assist in the coordination of transportation to and from events.
Performs recreation program planning, scheduling and implementation in one or more specialized areas.
Provides customer service; answers and returns phone calls; performs a variety of clerical duties to include typing, filing, and preparing documents.
Sets-up and tears-down equipment for events; maintains scores for games and activities; assists public works staff as needed.
Schedules and coordinates officials and referees.
Performs community outreach at schools, health fairs, and other community events; distributes flyers and mailers.
Completes accident and injury reports as needed.
May work weekends and/or overtime hours as needed.
Performs related duties as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This single position class receives general supervision from the Recreation Manager and is responsible for exercising functional supervision of assigned activities to include scheduling, set-up, break-down, and promotion of events. This position is also responsible for exercising lead supervision over part-time Recreation staff.
Qualification Guidelines
Education and/or Experience
Completed two years of college coursework in Recreation, Physical Education, Public Administration, or related field; AND one (1) year of professional experience in a recreation or related position with demonstrated increasing responsibility. Two years of experience may be substituted for each of the years of education.
Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of the activities, facilities, arrangements, resources, and equipment common to modern health and recreation programs. Working knowledge of programs for maintaining security and enforcing regulations at parks and recreational facilities. Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices; general office practices; customer service etiquette and methods; project and time management methods and practices; sports activities, equipment, and rules; work safety policies, procedures, and practices. Ability to operate basic office equipment; interact with the public and other contacted in the course of work professionally and tactfully; establish and maintain effective working relationships; communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of and ability to maintain a valid Class C California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record at time of hire.
Must possess Infant, Child, and Adult CPR and First Aid certifications at time of hire.
Special Requirements/Physical, Mental, Environmental Conditions
Environmental Conditions
Work is performed throughout City recreation site and facilities; may be exposed to heat and outdoor conditions, bodily fluids from injuries, and cleaning agents; incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends from time-to-time.
Physical ConditionsPrimary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Part-time employees are paid an hourly rate based on hours worked and typically work 19 hours or less per week. The City of Azusa does not pay into Social Security, so part-time employees are enrolled in the Accumulation Program for Part-Time and Limited-Service Employees (APPLE). Part-time employees pay 3.75% of wages into this retirement program and the City matches the employee's (3.75% of wages) share.
Paid Sick Leave:
Effective July 1, 2015, part-time employees accrue sick leave beginning with the first full pay period of employment on the basis of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked. The maximum accrual per year is 48 hours. A waiting period of 90 days is required before an employee may be eligible to use paid sick leave. Although paid sick leave can be carried over year to year, an employee can only accumulate up to a maximum of 48 hours and may use up to 24 hours in any one year.
This position isnot covered by any other medical benefits.
Part-time employees are not considered to be part of the City of Azusa Merit and Civil Service System and are thus designated as non-classified employees. Part-time employees are "at will" employees and, as such, may be terminated at any time without any right of appeal.
