Are you looking for an exciting new role where you can provide technical guidance in support of refinery capital projects? Join the Project Engineering Team at our Commerce City Refinery! Our refinery is the only petroleum refinery in Colorado and the largest in the Rocky Mountain region, processing 100,000 barrels of oil per day. In this role, you will be responsible for providing technical coordination and integration with the cross functional project stakeholders through all project phases to ensure effective design input, estimating, planning, scheduling, execution, turnover and C&SU of safe and quality projects in accordance with all Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S), Process Safety Management (PSM) and other regulatory requirements. You will also ensure the Asset Development and Execution Model (ADEM) requirements are met and any changes to scope development, estimate, schedule, and execution are managed appropriately.
As a Senior Project Engineer, you will demonstrate leadership throughout all phases of the project working with a multi-disciplinary team of Suncor employees and partners (consulting firms, contractors). Along with the Project Manager, you will establish and document the project within a project control plan including initial project cash flow, Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), and developing contracting strategy. You will ensure materials are procured in accordance with the project specifications, quality, cost, and schedule.
Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering
  • 7-10 years of work experience as a Project Engineer in the industrial sector (petro-chemical refinery environment preferred)
  • Project management proficiency, leadership and strong technical capability in the areas of scope development, risk management, project execution, commissioning and start-up, training, and operations (PMP or other relevant project management certification would be considered an asset)
  • Strong non-authoritative leadership abilities that enable you to build positive relationships with diverse groups and co-workers
  • Proven problem-solving skills, with the ability to create effective solutions to complex, technical issues following project process and best practices
  • A valid driver's license and a clean driving record
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the USA for the duration of your employment

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and execute on a portfolio of projects ranging in size from $100,000 to $30M in various areas of the refinery
  • Provide in-depth technical support, expertise and guidance for design and construction of new projects
  • Identify, evaluate, recommend, and implement opportunities to gain efficiencies through new technologies or improved processes
  • Lead development of all project deliverables and ensure project milestone dates are met
  • Identify potential risks (safety, cost, schedule, quality), based on the corporate risk matrix, and develop appropriate mitigation plans as needed throughout the project's life cycle
  • Develop project documentation and change management per Suncor's standards, guidelines, and processes, including all scopes of work (SOW) for Engineering, Procurement, and Construction activities
  • Maintain project meeting notes, actions items, decisions, changes and communications
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain, Project Controls and the Integrated Team to evaluate and award contracts
  • Build strong positive relationships while interacting closely with Engineering consultants, Vendors and Fabricators, Construction contractors, Inspectors, Regulatory agencies, internal and external partners
  • Coordinate reviews of all Engineering Work Packages and Construction Work Packages with the appropriate stakeholders to ensure all deliverables meet the project requirements
  • Support Operations in developing and executing project commissioning & start-up plans
  • Carry out project closeout activities including evergreen drawings updates per refinery document control procedures and refinery data bases (SPI, ETAP, etc) updates

Location and other Key Details:
  • You will work out of our Commerce City Refinery Business Center, located at 5455 Brighton Blvd.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs
  • Relocation support will be provided
  • This role is safety sensitive

Salary and Compensation Details:
  • $120,000 to $155,000 annual salary and an annual incentive (bonus) program
