Senior Principal Systems Engineer - Space Suit Embedded Systems - IPT Lead (Hybrid)
Hybrid: Employees who are working in Hybrid roles will work regularly both onsite and offsite. Ratio of time working onsite will be determined in partnership with your leader.
This role is part of our Space Systems engineering team and will lead a cross-functional team as the IPT Lead to develop the Embedded Systems supporting the next generation spacesuit. The successful candidate will collaborate with peer IPT Leads and effectively drive a highly collaborative team to deliver on our milestones within schedule and cost targets.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Work closely with Program Managers, Program Chiefs, and peer IPTs to lead a cross-functional engineering team in the design, development, procurement, build, & qualification of embedded spaceflight systems
- Support the engineering team by being accountable for execution performance, work planning & scheduling, cross-IPT communication of dependencies, and enable engineering system owners to synchronously drive parallel development efforts for an integrated system.
- Collaborate with peer IPTs to align and negotiate project execution milestones and handoffs
- Deliver work product on budget, schedule, and in compliance with technical & functional requirements
- Broadly collaborate with the Chief Engineer and IPT leadership to ensure interoperable system design in a technically consistent manner
- Develop & implement best practices and teaming approach in compliance with department process which produces consistent & measurable results
- Coordinate with subsystem owners within your IPT to remove roadblocks and provide necessary oversight and support
- Coordinate and interface across multiple functions within engineering, quality, operations, and the program office to achieve product development milestones, qualification testing, and product build per baselined cost and schedule.
- Monitor and track Earned Value progress as it relates to program milestones and support program actual vs. forecast cost reviews.
- Mentor team members to support their career development
- Determine necessary staffing demand to support project execution over the project lifetime
- Lead risk assessment reviews to identify root cause & detailed mitigation plans including funding, schedule, & staffing
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree (typically in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)) and a minimum of 10 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations OR Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years experience OR In absence of a degree, 14 years of relevant experience is required
- Must be a U.S. Person/Permanent Resident “Green Card” holder
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience developing hardware, serving as a Systems Engineer, and producing products which enter operation for space or aerospace applications
- Full lifecycle Systems Engineering experience with Embedded Systems
- Strong understanding of system requirements, architecture, decomposition, and the level of effort/tasking necessary to define a new system
- Experience using Earned Value metrics to demonstrate project execution performance against cost and schedule
- Experience creating Work Breakdown Structures and Integrated Program Schedules
- Ability to inclusively lead a collaborative multi-site with empathy & respect
- General knowledge of NASA spaceflight systems development & operations
- Demonstrated ability to deliver program success on complex engineering development programs through qualification & low rate production
- Strong written & verbal communication & presentation skills
- Proficiency with schematic capture, PWB design, circuit simulation, & mathematical analysis tools
- Ability to work within a matrix organization to achieve team and program goals.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with space avionics systems development related to systems, software, and/or hardware
- Experience developing system of systems for mission or life critical applications
- Bid & Proposal experience
- Experience with Cameo, MATLAB, Python, and/or VBA
- FMEA development & validation
- System & hardware integration and troubleshooting
- Experience with Jira for task management and planning
