Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems is seeking a Senior Principal Database Engineer to join our diverse team of professionals. This position is based in Redondo Beach, CA and/or open to remote telework.

Designs, develops, builds, analyzes, evaluates and installs database management systems to include database modeling and design, relational database architecture, metadata and repository creation and configuration management. Uses data mapping, data mining and data transformational analysis tools to design and develop databases. Determines data storage and optimum storage requirements. Prepares system requirements, source analysis and process analyses and design throughout the database implementation.

As a member of the Model Based Sustainment team, you will identify, develop and implement data analytics, and machine learning technologies for production within our Product Support organization. The role will define, develop, and implement, and transition new technology solutions for the digital ecosystem of various government platforms with a focus on data analytics for maintenance and sustainment processes and maintenance work instructions.

The position requires a strong understanding of computer and database systems as well as data analytics workflows. You will need to be familiar with data ETL processes and standard machine learning techniques. The position requires strong experience using a variety of data mining/data analysis methods, using a variety of data tools, building and implementing models, using/creating algorithms and creating/running simulations. Strong written and oral communication skills are required as the position involves extensive interfacing with internal and external customers, program offices, engineering disciplines, and industry suppliers. You must have a proven ability to drive business results with your data-based insights. The role will require the individual to be comfortable working with a wide range of stakeholders and functional teams. The desired candidate will have a passion for discovering solutions hidden in large data sets and working with stakeholders to improve business outcomes.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Develop and support ETL pipelines.
  • Perform in-depth data analysis and report findings.
  • Construct complex system / data architectures.
  • Build and support dashboards and visuals.
  • Assess new technologies and software platforms.
  • Support project management and planning as required.
  • Communicate advanced concepts and information in an understandable manner for audiences of varying levels of competency. Continuous interface with stakeholders, vendors, and customers is required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) with 9 years' experience with information systems, data analytics and/or computer programming; OR Master's Degree in STEM with 7 years' experience with information systems, data analytics and/or computer programming; OR PhD STEM with 4 years' experience with information systems, data analytics and/or computer programming.
  • Experience with querying databases and defining schemas (MS SQL, Postgres, other).
  • Experience with high volume production ETL pipelines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with an emphasis on production environments.
  • Experience working with and creating data architectures.
  • Experience administering and using Thingworx and Vuforia.
  • Experience with data visualization tools.
  • Experience with Command Line / Terminal scripting.
  • Ability to perform data analysis and report findings.
  • Experience in the development and sustainment of military platforms.
  • Proven ability to learn and master new technologies and techniques.
  • Extensive knowledge of MS Office Products.
  • Self-starter who is able to work with minimal direction.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret or Top-Secret Clearance as well as Program Special Access within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business needs.
  • Ability to travel 10-15% of the time.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • STEM Degree (Science, Technical, Engineering, or Mathematical).
  • Experience with any of the following: R, C, C++, Java, JavaScript.
  • Experience with public cloud solutions (i.e., AWS (preferred), Azure).
  • Knowledge of a variety of machine learning techniques (clustering, decision tree learning, artificial neural networks, etc.) and their real-world advantages/drawbacks.
  • Experience with Javascript, HTML / CSS to support dashboards and visuals.
  • Experience building system architectures using visual tools such as Visio
  • Experience working in an Agile environment.
  • Experience in the development, capture, and/or execution of R&D technology initiatives.
  • Current active Secret or Top-Secret clearance preferred.

Salary Range: $133,000 - $199,600
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
