Job description

Summary
The Senior Network Engineer will engineer and design network infrastructure in support of Middle Mile and Last Mile products for internal and external customers, responsible for project, cost management and the technical oversight of each project.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Maintain and provision network infrastructure equipment (routers, switches, servers, firewall, SBCs) providing updates for configuration changes, VLAN/IP routing additions/changes, firmware and keeping service contracts current.
• Maintain network infrastructure monitoring systems, ensuring QoS and providing feedback on changes to maintain high quality traffic.
• Provision SIP trucking as needed.
• Provision and maintain system integration with vendors.
• Provision and maintain data connectivity and stability.
• Daily review of network performance and traffic analysis.
• Work with field technicians to troubleshoot and repair equipment.
• Maintain and provision network equipment (routers, switches, compression, and traffic shaping devices) providing updates for configuration changes, VLAN/IP routing additions/changes, firmware and keeping service contracts current.
• Maintain network monitoring systems ensuring QoS, traffic management with optimization and providing feedback on changes to maintain a healthy network for customers. Provision and maintain customer networks as contracted for maintenance and support.
• Designs network configurations to meet the needs of NANA Regional Broadband Network (NRBN) customers.
• Works with telecom engineers to integrate voice, data, and video applications on local and wide area networks.
• Develops, maintains, and updates technical documentation libraries, posting commonly accessed references and FAQs to the company intranet.
• Aids management in vendor selection and contract & SLA monitoring.
• Works with cross-functional teams in the design and implementation of new technologies.
• Enforces project cost controls during implementation of network designs.
• Trains junior staff members, acting as an escalation point for technical troubleshooting.
• Works closely with the vendors' support staff to resolve issues with networking hardware, firmware, and software.
• Designs and/or approves network designs developed for clients and oversees their deployment, assuring that implementations meet all design and budgetary parameters.
• Assists departmental management with the development of systems standards, short- and long-term goals, project management and strategic directions.
• Remains current on new technological developments and techniques and attains certifications relevant to NRBN business model.
• Serves as a liaison between regional WAN/Internet engineers on operational issues.
• Proficiently uses the following routing protocols: TCP/IP, RIP, GRE, MPLS, BGP, EIGRP, OSPF and multicast.
• Proficiently uses the following technologies:
o KU/KA/C-Band VSAT for Internet delivery, VoIP, video conferencing, IPTV, multicast
o layer 2 switching, VLAN, TLS and MPLS (detailed knowledge)
o VPN, VPN concentrators and PIX firewall design, implementation, and support (detailed knowledge)
o authentication, management, and monitoring technology; MRTG, SNMP, ACS, RADIUS (detailed knowledge)
o selection, support, configuration of Cisco routing and switching platforms in an ISP and customer environment (expert knowledge)
o PSTN services including traditional TDM services and IP based services, STP, SS7, TLS, MPLS networks (detailed understanding)
o licensed and unlicensed microwave transport systems
o DSL and cable modem delivery systems (detailed knowledge)
o DS-3/OC-3 optical equipment (working/configuring knowledge)
o UNIX based operating systems, including being able to install, configure and maintain UNIX servers.
• Manages projects and provides customer engineering, design, and support functions to the sales staff.
• Must be able and willing to travel, as required, to job sites which may include the use of small airplanes and boats. Must be able and willing to work on call during nights, weekends, and holidays.
Other duties that are pertinent to the department or unit's success may also be assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in information technology or ten years of networking experience in the telecommunications industry; having successfully completed Cisco or equivalent certification program for CCDP, or CCSP is desired.
• Must be legally employable by any employer in the United States and not require sponsorship.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
• Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from others.
• Ability to calculate figures and amounts and ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
• CPR certification preferred.
• Valid driver's license required. In addition, for those driver's license that are not issued by the state of Alaska, you are required to convert your license to an Alaska Driver's License pursuant to AS 28.15.021 (2) any employee who will be driving while in the state of Alaska, must obtain an Alaska Driver's license within 90 days of entrance into the state. Failure to do so will result in the termination of your employment until such a license is obtained.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Weather: Indoors - environmentally controlled; requires most or all work to be done inside.
Noise level: The noise level in the work environment is usually that of a standard office atmosphere.
Description of environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.
Physical requirements: Employee is required to frequently lift and/or move up to 25 lbs and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 lbs. Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.
Travel: Yes. Must be able and willing to travel up to 35%, as required, to job sites which may include the use of small airplanes and boats.
