Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The Unified Communications Engineer position provides overall design, development and support for the University of Maryland's telephone and collaboration infrastructure. This may involve lifecycle management, and support of network, communications equipment and services, including but not limited to (VOIP, TDM and analog ) automatic call distribution, voicemail, audio/web/video conferencing, email, instant messaging, and related systems.
The role also plans and implements Cisco VOIP platform including endpoint activations, and providing collaboration services that enhance the teaching and working presence of the staff and faculty.
The engineer in this role is expected to take lead on departmental unified communications-related projects, providing accurate time planning and estimations of cost projects. This includes meeting with stakeholders, gathering and documenting requirements, requesting and pulling resources in order to coordinate efforts.
The engineer in this role also documents work, including developing requirements, design documentation, diagrams, specifications, test plans, and build documents along with schedules and estimates.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience:
- Six (6) to Nine (9) years of professional experience supporting the operations, maintenance, and administration of information technology infrastructure.
- Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to to lead presentations with small to medium sized groups.
- Able to organize and provide direction to junior staff members.
- A demonstrated commitment to customer service.
- Provide leadership and helps bridge the gap between team manager and team members on technical topics.
- Ability to effectively manage workload and delivery assignments on time.
- Skilled in the use of office productivity software such as Office 365 or Google Workspaces.
- Three years of Cisco Unified Communication / Telephony experience in a large environment.
- Identify problems in the enterprise network infrastructure and propose solutions.
- Design, implement and support network security services.
- Integrate disparate systems.
- Identify functions that can be improved by process development and implementation.
- Meet with customers and obtain specific requirements.
- Work independently, as well as within a team environment.
- Prepare purchase requisitions, and SOWs with executive summaries and backup documentation.
- Instruct and coach others fairly.

- Experience in a higher education environment.
- Working, hands on engineering knowledge of the following technologies: Redsky e911 and Cisco Emergency REsponder; TCP/IP, OSPF, BGP; DNS, DHCP; SNMP; Python, Perl, PHP, Java, C/C++; WebEx, Google Suites, Cisco Call Center, Cisco Call Manager and communications gateways.
- Experience with conference and desktop video systems.
