Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a Technical Professional with extensive experience in ceramic science and engineering to work in the area of analysis and characterization of multifaceted material powders. In this role, you will make recommendations on test methods for material powders and serve as a bridge between customer needs and the execution of specialized tests to satisfy those needs. This work will be performed as part of a multi-disciplinary team passionate about the development and characterization of materials for national nuclear security purposes.

This position resides in our Mechanical Properties and Mechanics Group, Materials in Extremes Section of the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The individual will also interact and coordinate with other team members in other ORNL Research Divisions.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Interact directly with customers, collaborators, and local team members to identify and interpret technical needs.

  • Collaborate on the identification of techniques/equipment and interpretation of results from ceramic powder characterization and processing.

  • Communicate status updates of current work to principal investigator(s) and program management.

  • Collaboratively write technical reports summarizing material descriptions, experimentation, and interpretations, and provide recommendations for future work.

  • Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements.

  • Background in ceramic powder characterization and traditional ceramic processing in an industrial environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in ceramic engineering.

  • Have experience with how both idealized and non-idealized mechanical loading affects dry pressing response and how microstructure can affect thermo-mechanical properties.

  • Fastidious and readily willing to ensure requests are progressing and/or completed

  • Experienced with technical service; namely, iteratively responding to customer needs and making recommendations and confident plans for laboratory testing to address them, working with other scientists, engineers, and technicians to complete that testing, and communicating those results and suggestions back to the customer.

  • Be fastidious and have ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.

  • Familiarity with structural finite element analysis (FEA).

  • In-depth knowledge of interpreting results generated from characterization equipment such as thermogravimetric analyzer, differential scanning calorimeter, gas adsorption (BET), gas pycnometer, laser-based particle size distribution equipment, sieving equipment, tap density measurement equipment, and optical, digital, and scanning electron microscopes.

  • Experience with milling, grinding and other comminution techniques.

Special Requirements:

  • Three letters of reference are required and can be uploaded to your profile or emailed directly to PSDrecruit@ornl.gov. Please include the title of the position in the subject line.
