Overview

HarperCollins is seeking a Senior Managing Editor to manage both fiction and nonfiction titles for the William Morrow, Avon, Mariner, Dey Street, Harvest, and Harper Voyager imprints. This position will report to the VP, Group Executive Managing Editor.

Responsibilities

  • Meets weekly with publisher/deputy publisher to review imprint lists, schedules, and production issues, and follow up as needed.
  • Acts as the main liaison between publishing, editorial, production editorial, editorial services, production, and art to coordinate book schedules; follows up on late and missing materials and resolves production problems and issues.

  • Generates and distributes schedules at key book stages. Works knowledgeably and sensitively with deputy publishers, editors, production editors, production managers, and designers to create appropriate and achievable schedules.

  • Solves problems strategically, actively, and independently to make sure books release on time and to the highest standards.

  • Manages galley schedules, tracks need-by dates, coordinates galley copy and galley solicitation, and attends weekly galley meetings.

  • Attends seasonal launch and planning meetings and follows up as needed.

  • Enters and maintains metadata and schedules in the title management system, reviews change memos, and tracks book-related materials for other departments.

  • Reviews galley covers, catalog covers, and jackets.

  • Assesses, logs, and assigns manuscripts, and works collaboratively with the production editorial team to trouble-shoot crash schedules, knotty conversions, or challenging manuscripts.

  • Offers production editorial support when needed by coding and tagging manuscripts, assigning freelancers, and collating and checking page proofs.

  • Attends and/or runs weekly production meetings.

  • Handles production editorial work as needed for crash, special, or overflow projects.

  • Helps establish department workflows, standards, and best practices.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years’ trade book experience in Managing Editorial/Production Editorial.
  • Great patience and a calm, results-oriented approach under stressful circumstances.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management.

  • Strong computer/MS Word and Excel/Acrobat Professional skills and knowledge of electronic copyediting and coding.

  • Solid copyediting and proofreading skills.

  • Knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style (16th and 17th eds.).

  • This job requires someone who can foster a can-do, upbeat, and flexible attitude with other team members and departments.

The salary range for this position is $110,000-$120,000. We recognize that attracting the best talent is key to our strategy and success as a company. The quoted salary range represents our good faith estimate as to what our ideal candidates are likely to expect, and we tailor our offers within the range based on the selected candidate's experience, industry knowledge, technical and communication skills, and other factors that may prove relevant during the interview process.
