About SIR 

The Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) is a thriving professional medical society dedicated to optimizing patient care and improving lives through minimally invasive, image-guided treatments. Located in Fairfax, Virginia, SIR represents one of the most innovative, exciting and competitive specialties in medicine today. SIR is a 501(c)(6) professional association that supports more than 8,100 interventional radiology physicians, trainees, medical students, scientists and clinical professionals. SIR is also comprised of SIR's 501(c)(3) Foundation, which focuses on research and fundraising to advance the future of interventional radiology. Together SIR and SIR Foundation have nearly 50 staff, combined annual revenues of $14.0 million, and assets of nearly $17 million.


Position Summary

The Senior Managing Director sets the strategic direction of the SIR Foundation (SIRF) and ensures it achieves its mission and goals. The Senior Managing Director serves as the key staff officer regarding the foundation's day-to-day operations and works closely with Board leadership and staff. This pivotal role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including Board of Directors relations, financial management, donor and fundraising development, and research and grant program development and oversight.

This role requires strong leadership and relationship building skills to effectively work with physician leaders, external advisors/consultants and staff, excellent communication skills, strategic thinking and a passion for growing a medical specialty society foundation.

Requirements

Strategic Leadership

In collaboration with SIR & SIR Foundation leaders and volunteers, ensure goals, objectives and action plans support SIR and SIR Foundation strategy.

Align and monitor activities and functions within SIR Foundation and across the organization to ensure plan deliverables are met.

Ensure that leadership, membership, stakeholders and the public are informed and educated about SIR Foundation's initiatives and accomplishments.

Provide coaching, management, and supervisory skills needed to foster staff engagement and ensure high performance.

Leverage expertise of teams across SIR, and foster open communication and collaboration, to efficiently and effectively support foundation activities.

SIR Foundation Operations

Oversee Foundation operations, asset protection, business development, financial budgeting/management, and governance.

Work with foundation Board to develop and implement SIR Foundation's strategy.  Assist in the development of current and long-term organizational goals and objectives. 

Work closely with Board members, committee chairs, and research partners to ensure they are provided with appropriate support systems to accomplish project and organizational goals.


Research Development and Grant Management

Provide strategic oversight for research initiatives and grant programs, fostering innovation and impact in healthcare and medical research.

Provide oversight of research programs, including development and administration of multi-center clinical studies, and industry collaborations.  

Maintain and refine internal grant review process, including research deadline and payment schedules.

Responsible for managing grants and contracts, including negotiating research agreement terms that reflect the needs of SIR and SIR Foundation. 

Monitor research from application to completion; maintain regular reporting to leadership and members regarding status of all research performed by SIR and SIRF.

Identify sources of funding for investigators and keep members abreast of new funding opportunities.

Connect manufacturers seeking to do clinical trials with qualified investigators among SIR members and act as conduit between corporations and researchers to set up clinical trials.

Identify appropriate business/industry contacts and recruit clinical trials investigators and sites.

Facilitate interaction among investigators; act as coordinator of multi-institutional grants.

Coordinate with interested investigators on the development of clinical trial design that will meet the requirements of FDA and potential participating companies.


Fundraising Development

Provide oversight and strategic direction to the Foundation's development department.

Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy that aligns with the Foundation's goals and mission. 

Identify and cultivate relationships with potential donors, including individuals, corporations, foundations, and government agencies. Maintain and nurture existing donor relationships.

Create and oversee a major gifts program to solicit substantial donations from individuals and organizations.


Representing SIR and SIR Foundation Externally 

Engage with formal coalitions, informal networks and other stakeholders to obtain and share knowledge on healthcare and medical research.

Act as liaison to National Institute of Health, National Science Foundation, and other applicable funding organizations and other radiological societies.

Keep abreast of research conducted by other membership organizations and funding organizations. Publicize information to members and leadership.


Education and Experience 

Bachelor's degree required, master's degree preferred, preferably in health services research, or related field. 

Minimum seven to ten years' experience in health care with a health/medical association, research organization, or other health-related organization.

Demonstrated research experience, including critiquing, designing, evaluating, and producing research, as well as grant writing and clinical trials experience.

Experience working with volunteer committees and Boards of Directors

Staff management required.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Proven self-starter.

A high motivation level and customer / member service orientation.

Superior skills in organizational leadership and staff supervision and mentoring, planning, communication, and interpersonal skills, including diplomacy and effective listening skills.

The ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously. 

Demonstrated experience forming and maintaining collaborations and partnerships with external organizations.

Experience with Associations, Foundations, and/or research organizations.

Proven results to influence change and/or develop new methods of volunteer engagement. 

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex issues to diverse audiences. 

Desire for continuous learning to achieve deep understanding and knowledge of best practices, and market trends.  



Requirements: 

SIR is not considering applicants outside of these states at this time: CO, DC, FL, IL, KS, MA, MD, MI, NC, OH, PA, TN, TX, VA 


Working Conditions and Physical Requirements: 

Small, fast-paced open office environment with moderate noise levels. Use of phones and computers for extended periods of time. Utilize office equipment and communication technologies for conference calls and teleconference meetings/webinars. Requires general mobility to move through the facility. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Frequent interaction with internal staff and physician members/board via phone, in person, email, and other mediums. Normal sitting and standing activities for an office environment.  SIR employees are currently working in a hybrid or remote fashion and will have the ability to continue to work with a flexible arrangement based on business needs. Some travel required - up to 10%.
