Job description

This role will be the site lead for safety, risk and patient/Family Relations at Martha's Vineyard Hospital. This role will directly report the Community Leader for Safety/Risk/PFR at MGB. The leader in this role will oversee the execution of MGB strategy, processes and infrastructure for the domains of safety, risk and PFR at MVH. This role is the leader at MVH to support the implementation of standardization of best practices and a system strategy as it relates to risk, safety and PFR. Additionally, this role would manage any other team members within those domains.  This role will maintain sound organizational relationships, work well within a matrixed and integrated health care system, and will be facile in performing bi-directional communication with MGB leadership as well site leadership. This role will collaborate site leadership to execute long and short-term goals for Risk Management, Patient Safety programs, and patient and Family Relations.  Responsible for executing and facilitating process improvements in a safe, consistent environment that promotes quality care and optimal patient outcomes within the constraints of available resources. Because this is a leadership role in an active change management environment, this leader will need to demonstrate flexibility and open mindedness as the contours of this position will actively evolve over time.

       Provide input as directed/needed by the Community leader for safety/risk/PFR at MGB to support the creation of the strategy, policies, and guidelines to ensure a highly reliable system and culture for safety within Mass General Brigham.

       Build out MVH's safety/risk/PFR infrastructure, ensuring standardization in training, processes, and safety responses that are in line with MGB.

       Executes the MGB safety strategy at MVH including those around root cause analysis, safety event reporting/management/mitigation.

       Under the direction of the community leader for safety/risk/PFR, implement the system-wide safety event reporting system at MVH including conversion from legacy, siloed systems.

       Support as needed for system wide safety events such as recalls, shortages, and other events that impact safety for MVH.

       Under the direction of the community leader for safety/risk/PFR, implement the standardized risk management strategy, policies, and procedures at Salem Hospital, ensuring that risk management activities both align to and augment our approach to patient safety.

       Serve as the MVH escalation pathway for significant adverse events, risks, etc that need to be escalated to the system level.

       Executes MGB PFR strategy and oversees management of PFR for MVH: This includes ensuring review of patient experience data from the NRC surveys at MVH, accountability to the Community leader for safety/risk/PFR to ensure that PFR processes at MVH are in line with MGB processes and policies. Also ensures that tracking of PFR is in line with MGB tracking processes.

       Understand data provided by the system team, and use knowledge of local practices and culture to identify areas of opportunity for improvement of patient safety as well as communicate to the system areas which are at risk.

       Coordinates internal performance improvement activities at MVH.

       Oversight of the MVH team as they manage patient related and visitor adverse events, ensuring MVH is  compliant with all risk management activities including malpractice claims.

       Prepares reports and presentations pertaining to: Patient Safety, Performance Improvement, and Regulatory Affairs and others, as requested.

       Under the direction of the community leader for safety/risk/PFR, implements and coordinates safety/risk/PFR improvement initiatives.

       Supports the Patient Care Assessment Committee and Medical Staff process improvement activities, identifying trends, analyzing data, generating reports and recommending actions to achieve and sustain improvement.

       Supports State and Federal Office of Rural Health Rural Health activities including generating reports and recommending activities for available grant funds.

       Manges the department budget effectively and determines fiscal requirements and prepares budgetary recommendations.

       Performs staff performance evaluations establishing a development plan for each employee.

       Manages 1 direct report.

       Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Undergraduate required. A master's degree in nursing, Public Health, Business Administration, Public Administration, or Health Services Administration preferred. 
  • Minimum of 3 years relevant experience in Safety, Risk Management, and Patient Family Relations.
  • Minimum of 3 years demonstrated success in leading process improvement and initiatives and managing teams.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

 

  • Must be available to work in the case of a Hospital declared emergency.
  • Must be available to assist during regulatory agency reviews.

 

ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

         Demonstrated knowledge and application of safety science, tools and techniques; statistics; group facilitation skills; medical staff peer review concepts.

         Demonstrated knowledge and experience performing all risk management activities including malpractice claims.

         Knowledge of requirements for maintaining TJC accreditation and standards compliance.

         Kindness, Empathy and excellent emotional intelligence, with the ability to balance collaboration vs. execution. 

         Managing complexity:  Make sense of complex, high quality, and sometimes contradictory information to effectively solve problems

         Accountability: Holding self and others accountable for commitments, responsibilities and behaviors

         Excellent organizational skills, ability to work on multiple projects under multiple deadlines; highly energetic, and able to embrace challenges and change.

         Must be a team player and work well with a variety of people in all levels of the organization.
