The City of Buena Park Community Services Department is seeking responsible, enthusiastic, and energetic Senior Lifeguards to join our Summer Aquatic Program!
Applications will be accepted on a CONTINUOUS BASIS with a first review date of Monday, February 26, 2024. Interested individuals are strongly encouraged to apply early! Senior Lifeguards work 20-30 hours per week and are scheduled to work a flexible work schedule that include mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
*All applicants must be a minimum of sixteen years of age or older at the time of application.
GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general supervision, the Senior Lifeguard supervises pool lifeguards and other pool personnel; directs pool activities on an assigned shift; applies lifesaving and swimming principles and practices; first aid principles and practices; and does other related work as required and assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is a part-time, non-benefited, position. The Senior Lifeguard is differentiated from the Lifeguard in that it can perform more tasks independently. This position may provide direction to other Lifeguards and pool personnel. This position provides an opportunity for incumbents with an interest in pursuing a career in municipal government to learn about municipal government functions and gain experience by completing tasks and special assignments related to the program area.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
  1. Assist in training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating aquatic staff and other employees.
  2. Ensures an excellent guest experience and maintains order among pool patrons.
  3. Oversees plans, develops, conducts and supervises a wide variety of activities and the daily operations of aquatics programming.
  4. Adheres to City and departmental policies and procedures.
  5. Takes charge of emergency situations and provides emergency care as necessary.
  6. Assists in organizing and conducting weekly and annual in-service training for aquatic staff. Assigns job responsibilities such as facility clean up and maintenance.
  7. Maintains program records and prepares reports as required.
  8. Tests and monitors water chemistry and clarity; and inspect facilities.
  9. Monitors and assists with desk reception, telephone support and related customer service activities.
  10. Monitors and assists in accepting registrations and fees, processing receipts, and accounting for money.
  11. Monitors and assists in preparation of facilities for regular operation of recreation swim, lessons, and other daily operations.
  12. Removes and replaces pool covers and lane lines. Assists with routine pool cleaning and maintenance work on or around swimming pool.
  13. Monitors and patrols the swimming pool and aquatics facility including keeping a lookout for accidents in the water and pool area; warn patrons and dangerous practices with pool usage.
  14. Follows and enforces pool regulations and codes in an effort to prevent patron accidents.
  15. May perform the duties of a Lifeguard, Swim Instructor, and Cashier as needed.
  16. May act for the Aquatics Coordinator in his/her absence.
  17. Assists in citywide special events and community recreation activities.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES
Knowledge of:
Professional lifesaving standards; methods of organizing, conducting and supervising aquatic programs; swimming pool rules and general care of children.
Ability to:
Perform basic arithmetic; plan, organize and conduct aquatic programs to completion; maintain accurate records and prepare reports and communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, volunteers, participants, and the public; pass a swim test, and demonstrate the ability to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and administer lifesaving measures and first aid.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, stand, swim, run, turn, twist, bend, balance, push, pull, reach, lift, carry, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to touch, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; must be able to move up to 100 pounds; may be exposed to direct sunlight, heat, wet and/or humid conditions, toxic, chlorinated water and caustic chemicals.
Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve problems; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new information or skills; perform highly detailed work; work on multiple, concurrent tasks; work with frequent interruptions; work under intensive deadlines; and interact with staff, management, vendors, contractors, the public, and others encountered in the course of work.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Employees typically work outdoors at City recreation pools, facilities and venues; required to perform physical work.
EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE
Any education, training or experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities and one year paid or volunteer experience working in an aquatic program.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATES/SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
All applicants must possess the following valid American Red Cross Certifications: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Automated External Defibrillator (AED), Lifesaving for the Professional Rescuer, and Standard First Aid (or equivalent) within 30 days of appointment.
All applicants must be a minimum of sixteen (16) years of age or older at the time of application.

Physical Examination:

SALARY RANGE: Composed of six (6) steps - Entry step through E step (Except management positions). Each step represents an increase of approximately five (5) percent.
RETIREMENT: Provided through deferred compensation 457 plan administered by Nationwide Retirement Solutions. Employee pays member contribution of 3.75%. The City matches the employee's contribution of 3.75%.
