RS&H is seeking a Senior ITS Engineering Associate in our Transportation Practice.
Job Summary:
This position serves as a technical specialist, developing and applying advanced concepts and approaches to more challenging assignments. This position works on a major or multiple moderate projects with complex elements and is experienced in all phases of ITS and Signals engineering, including substantial and varied experience in project planning. This position works independently, developing and implementing new services, processes, standards, or operational plans that will impact the achievement of functional requirements.
The ideal candidate will have previous responsibilities and expertise designing ITS, roadway lighting, and signalization plans including the electrical engineering components of these systems. This candidate will also have field experience with oversight of implementing these systems and ability to provide constructability reviews.
Essential Functions
- Serves as a technical specialist who develops and applies advanced concepts and approaches to more challenging assignments.
- Develop solutions and create project designs and plans for all phases of projects.
- Leads projects of moderate size in scope and complexity.
- Directs and coordinates teams for the delivery of projects.
- Coordinates the ITS, roadway lighting, and signalization plan design.
- Prepare and/or review traffic design and construction documents for ITS, roadway lighting, and signalization plans based on state and national standards.
- Works on a major project or multiple moderate projects with complex elements.
- Assists upper-level management and staff as a technical specialist or advisor.
- Interacts regularly with clients, vendors, and other key stakeholders, ensuring effective communication and coordination across the project.
- Reviews and mentors junior staff's work and provides technical guidance to other professionals and technicians.
- Remains knowledgeable of all applicable federal, state, and local codes, criteria, regulations, and ordinances that are pertinent to the respective discipline.
- May direct project teams and/or supervise direct reports, including hiring, coaching, performance reviews, development conversations, and productivity management.
- Performs as-needed field reviews and observations of ongoing construction projects to maintain and increase understanding of construction practices and design applications.
- Performs all other duties as assigned and within the scope of practice.
Minimum Qualifications
Education/ Experience
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
- Minimum of 10 years relevant experience supporting ITS engineering projects including implementation of ITS network, power distribution, fiber optic communications, emergency power, vehicle detection, CCTV subsystems, and installation of tolling components.
- Strong familiarity with FDOT traffic engineering standards, policies, and guidelines.
- Working knowledge of NEC and other NFPA codes
- Experience with performing circuit design, voltage drop calculations, and sizing of electrical services.
- Experience in Freeway or Arterial Management System designs
- Familiarity with communication network topology design
- Experience in working as part of a multi-disciplinary design team.
- Ability to work independently with general supervision.
- Understanding of the application of traffic operations principles including ITE, MUTCD, AASHTO, and state DOT requirements, policies, manuals, and procedures.

Proficient in production software and construction document production. Must possess strong oral and written communication skills. Must have the ability to effectively interact with and build strong relationships with clients, customers, contractors, and other key stakeholders. Proven ability to successfully address challenging or potentially controversial issues in a sound professional and business-like manner.
