Job description

Under the direction of the Human Resources Manager, the Senior Human Resources (HR) Generalist provides comprehensive, analytic and administrative support for a range of personnel and payroll related functions in support of career, contract, limited, and casual restricted appointments in the School of Education & Information Studies (SE&IS). SE&IS is comprised of two academic departments, 16 research centers, several faculty research projects, three infant-12 grade schools, and two partnership schools external to UCLA. Responsibilities include independently overseeing and managing staff appointments (career, contract, limited, and casual restricted), separations & terminations, leave administration, and monitoring and analyzing payroll and personnel actions to ensure compliance with federal, state and UC policies and practices. The Senior Human Resources Generalist will provide support and oversite to a wide range of Human Resources activities, while proactively promoting compliance and a positive customer experience, for an assigned list of SE&IS Centers, Researcher Units, Faculty, and Staff. The incumbent will serve as the primary point of contact for HR related questions for employees and/or unit managers/supervisors within their purview. The incumbent will advise on both routine and non-routine questions, analyzing problems or issues that arise and determining the appropriate action or next steps escalating issues as appropriate.
The Senior Human Resources Generalist will provide support, oversite, and guidance on recruitments and recruitment strategy, appointments, on-boarding, personnel actions, and payroll (routine and non-routine) processing. The incumbent will liaise with internal and external departmental offices - such as Campus Human Resource [Compensation, Employment, Employee & Labor Relations] Insurance and Risk Management, and Dashew Center - to obtain information on a variety of employment related topics. Additional duties include supporting the accommodation process; facilitation of benefits administration and advisement of benefits eligibility for all applicable positions; providing guidance on available benefits options, advising, and administering leave of absences requests, and liaising with CHR's Central Benefits Office and UCPath Center when needed. Additionally, the Senior Human Resources Generalist will serve as a reviewer/approver in UCPath; ensuring transactions are completed accurately and according to University Policy.
The incumbent must be able to interpret policy, take initiative, exercise good judgment, and independently prioritize work while maintaining confidentiality.

Required/Preferred
Minimum of 5-7 years of experience working in an administrative department, preferably within a University or Higher Education setting.
Required
Advanced knowledge of University Personnel and Payroll policies, procedures, and organizational structure.
Preferred
Advance knowledge and experience in using UCLA systems including UCPath, Online Financial Systems Reports (OFSR), Campus Data Warehouse (CDW), People Admin, and other campus personnel and fiscal tools.
Preferred
Demonstrated working knowledge of the personnel processes related to staff appointments, promotions, changes in titles/types of appointments, and appointment limitations.
Required
Superior writing and editing skills sufficient to compose and edit correspondence and emails that are professional, clear, concise and grammatically correct.

Ability to make oral, group, and one-on-one presentation for the purposes of providing information, explaining policies and procedures, and answer questions.

Ability to prioritize and adjust a heavy workload to meet deadlines. Demonstrate the ability to determine the relative importance of job responsibilities to meet these deadlines.

Experience in synthesizing information, interpreting policies and processes as well as informing others with clarity and accuracy of details.

Working knowledge of University health plans, FML, Leave of Absence, retirement plans, and other employee benefits.

Required
Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in Human Resources and/or payroll responsibilities or equivalent combination of relevant experience. Preference for HR/Payroll within a University setting.
