Job description

Job Description Summary
The HF/UX + FEI (Human Factors/User Experience + Front End Innovation) Team works within the Medication Delivery Solutions (MDS) business unit. The role of HF+UX within this business is to bring knowledge and expertise in user-centered design that begins with the initiation of programs and transitions into design and development.
This individual contributor role will be responsible for utilizing evidence-based tools and principles to design systems and products that match the user's needs and environment. They align research, design, and business strategies by working with project teams and business leadership to drive user-centered product development, which is proven to reduce risks, minimize development costs, and maximize market acceptance of products.
Job Description
We are the makers of possible
BD is one of the largest global medical technology companies in the world. Advancing the world of health™ is our Purpose, and it's no small feat. It takes the imagination and passion of all of us-from design and engineering to the manufacturing and marketing of our billions of MedTech products per year-to look at the impossible and find transformative solutions that turn dreams into possibilities.
We believe that the human element, across our global teams, is what allows us to continually evolve. Join us and discover an environment in which you'll be supported to learn, grow and become your best self. Become a maker of possible with us.
Responsibilities
HF+UX engineers will have the opportunity engage in numerous MDS product development programs across the business unit. This is a hybrid, on-site role (in office 3 days per week) in either Salt Lake City/Sandy, UT, or Franklin Lakes, NJ.
The engineer will engage in product design work and independent review, including the following:

  • Conduct other forms of generative reach including but not limited to competitive usability assessment, subject matter expert (SME) and key opinion leader (KOL) interviews, focus groups, and surveys. Ability to facilitate/moderate studies with clinical professionals.
  • Distill research insights into user needs and themes through the process of affinitization or KJ Analysis to ensure traceability.

  • Evaluate Use Error as part of use-related risk analysis (URRA) and mitigation efforts in partnership with Medical Affairs.
  • Conduct product evaluations, brainstorming sessions, competitive analysis, and other usability engineering methodologies with both internal teams and external vendors.

A key characteristic of an associate in this role is an all-in, get-your-hands-dirty mindset. The associate should be able to figure out how to prototype a concept quickly, in sometimes non-traditional ways, to get a quick reaction or test feasibility with end users to enable Agile development. A level of comfort in a wood, metal, or machine shop, and the ability to piece components together in a lab is strongly desired. This is not a sit-at-your desk, someone else makes the parts job - it is very practical and vital to spur innovation in the MDS business.
