Role Overview
NYU Hillel/The Bronfman Center for Jewish Life is seeking thoughtful, innovative, and experienced candidates for its next Senior Director. The Senior Director is a leader of the senior professional team responsible for implementing Hillel's strategic vision of Jewish life on campus. This person works closely with the Executive Director and all Bronfman Center staff and is responsible for managing all student programming and engagement. The Senior Director will be a valued partner to the Executive Director in shaping the strategic overview and vision, encompassing student programming and engagement strategy, stewardship and donor cultivation, enhancing University and community partnerships, and management of student-facing communication. The Senior Director supervises a team of 13 professionals, and their role extends to spearheading the programming, student engagement, and communications departments on a larger scale. The Senior Director will provide support to the entire Hillel staff alongside the Executive Director to ensure the organization's overarching goals are met.
What You'll Do
  • Partner with the Executive Director of the Bronfman Center for Jewish Student Life to establish the vision and mission of NYU Hillel and to ensure appropriate internal alignment with staff, services, and programs.
  • Determine and establish performance standards, resources, processes, and metrics to support the overall organizational mission.
  • Oversee the development and delivery of programming, events, and services.
  • Manage the overall service delivery and quality of student advisement, identity counseling, mentorship, and leadership development for affiliated student groups.
  • Partner with the Executive Director on development and stewardship opportunities.
  • Oversee related budgets and manage spending.
  • Collaborate with the relevant university centers and departments, including faith-based and affinity groups, Student Affairs, HR, Budget, University Development and Global Services.
  • Cultivate a data-driven environment to ensure the estimated 2500 Jewish students at NYU are engaged in creative opportunities, deep initiatives, and an innovative Jewish experience.
  • Collaborate with Executive Director to set priorities and prepare for weekly meetings of the Executive Committee and semi-annual meetings of the entire board.

Collaborate with the Executive Director to establish the vision and mission of the Bronfman Center and to ensure appropriate internal alignment with staff, services, and programs (25%)
  • Determine office-wide performance standards and how they should be optimally measured.
  • Determine how human and physical resources will be deployed, both in terms of long-term planning and ad hoc, as needs required.
  • Direct the development of training programs and resources for new and continuing staff.
  • Provide direction for the recruitment, selection, orientation, development and retention of high caliber staff; ensure offices have well-qualified and properly trained employees to carry out the Bronfman Center's mission.
  • Develop systems, processes, and metrics that will guide successful outcomes and areas requiring further and/or continuous improvement.
  • Implement the overall "roadmap" established with the Executive Director to ensure appropriate internal alignment with staff, services, and programs.
  • Ensure clear communication of the activities and needs of the Bronfman Center to the Advisory Board, providing regular updates.
  • Serve as the Acting Director of the Bronfman Center in the absence of the Executive Director.

Oversee the development and delivery of programming, events, and services primarily led by student life staff (30%)
  • Ensure the alignment of both faith-specific and interfaith deliverables with the NYU Center for Spiritual Life, NYU Student Affairs and the University as appropriate.
  • Establish and monitor standards of consistency and quality of events and publications using evaluation assessment tools.
  • Oversee related budgets and manage spending. Ensure appropriate representation from the Bronfman Center to the Chaplains Circle with NYU's Center for Spiritual Life.

Manage the overall service delivery and quality of student advisement, mentorship, and leadership development for 10-15 affiliated student groups provided by rabbinical counselors and others at the Bronfman Center (20%)
  • Provide leadership to counselors on retention, success, and intervention strategies.
  • Escalate issues and referrals as appropriate to Counseling and Wellness Services, the Moses Center for Students with Disabilities, Residential Life and Housing Services, Office of Global Services, Office of General Counsel, Public Affairs, and other Student Affairs partners.
  • Interface regularly with Student Affairs leaders, community organizers, foundations and grant-bearing organizations, Human Resources, Finance, and partner universities and organizations in support of the Bronfman Center.

In partnership with the Executive Director, secure additional funds for new projects, primarily through the development and stewardship of relationships with foundations, grant-bearing institutions, and partnership with Provost Fiscal Affairs as appropriate (25%)
  • Oversee the development and administration of the overall Bronfman Center budget to ensure alignment with ongoing and emerging priorities.
  • Partner with the assigned HR Business Partner to define and develop new or revised roles that better meet changing business needs.
  • Grow and steward a grants portfolio of $500,000 annually and oversee an organizational budget of $1.8 million.

What You'll Bring to the Job
  • Minimum of eight years of professional experience, with at least three years in a leadership role in a Jewish or secular nonprofit, higher education, or related organization.
  • A strong knowledge base of Jewish content, ranging from traditional Jewish texts to contemporary Jewish wisdom, culture, and unconventional Jewish sources.
  • A deep love of Jewish people, especially young adults, here and everywhere, including in Israel.
  • Proven success in strategic planning, team management, financial resource development, stakeholder relations, and inspiring pluralistic Jewish life.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to excellence.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, willingness to take risks, and learn from experiences.
  • Ability to create a space for diverse perspectives and ensure all student voices are heard.
  • Creative problem-solving and inspiring presence.
  • Proactive communication and collaboration across offices and agencies.
  • Expertise in leading conversations about Judaism and Israel in an approachable way.
  • Appreciation and passion for working with college-age students and stakeholders in a university setting.
  • A joyful spirit and enthusiasm for building community.
  • Master's degree or Rabbinic ordination preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with strong knowledge of Judaism and Israel. Hebrew comprehension preferred.
